I have a friend who wants to upgrade from City Select 5 NA to City Select 6 NA. I understand from this message board that the upgrade costs $75.00.

What I can't find is where the upgrade can be purchased and where on Garmin's web site is the upgrade offer.

Also, how big are the changes from CS 5 to CS 6?

Thanks,
Kelly

For the UpGrade CD, go to the Garmin Web site:-

http://www.garmin.com/

and from the left hand side click on "MapSource Unlock", which will take you to

http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/update/cd_update_details.asp?CD=011-00762-03

from the table of updates select C/S North America, which you will see is v.6, on the next page select if you live inside or outside the U.S. and follow onscreen instructions for ordering the Update CD.

The Update costs $75 if you Registered your unit before 06/20/2004, if registered after this date the update is free.

As for the changes between versions, i don't really know. But from the posts and replies to this subject previously, i think it is safe to say not all new roads have been added, and there appears to be outstanding errors from C/S v5. Of course it will be an improvement to v5, but how much do you travel in N/A is the deciding point.

hope this helps :)

The main changes are better coverage of Canada and the additon of Pureto Rico. The POI's seem to have had a major overhaul, although there are still some that are listed that haven't existed for a while.

im in a city that growing urban sprawl is almost an epidemic. CS6/NA had the completed road my friend just moved to, as well as the new suburban "house farm" down the street from my place.

It still calls the grocery store "Kohl's", even tho they were bought out by Copp's a year or so ago.

You no longer appear to be in a submarine when you go to Logan Airport via the Big Dig connection btw Mass Pike and Ted Williams Tunnel (before "lost satellite reception").

Real benefit of updating, however, are the errors and omissions they fixed in V6 that you don't know about now, and won't know about until it is "too late" and you are lost/can't find the road that your hotel/meeting/conference/customer is at. Of course, V6 won't be perfect and it could still happen, but V6 is the best you can do.

Hey folks,

I have been AWAY from this forum for a bit, my apologies.

Of the 4 friends (fellow deputies) who I got to buy their own, 2
have paid for the $75 upgrade (not received it yet).

According to them the big differences are:

1. new updated maps of course
2. different screen layouts.

I went to garmin.com and there is an area to look at the new scren layouts. *IF* I looked in the right area and *IF* these are for the 3600, then I PERSONALLY feel they SUCK.

1. any comments?
2. if I am correct, is there a way to just get the updated maps without the new screens??

Thanks..

They should be able to get the upgrade CD first and then pay to unlock it. The fact that they don't have it yet is probably what led them to believe that the screen layouts have changed. My guess is that you're looking at the way that Garmin displays the maps on the web and not how it looks on the iQue.

The update CD is free so I'm not sure how they could have paid for it. Once you get the Update CD, when you go to unlock it, you have to pay $75 but then it's unlocked immediately.

That is, unless they paid the unlock fee via check and are waiting to get an unlock coupon from Garmin.

I see no difference in the display or layout of the maps from V5 to V6, just updates to the data on the maps, etc.

You request the CD from Garmin's site...it is free, including shipping. Once you go to install it, you have to purchase an unlock code, that costs $75.

How big are the changes...no changes if nothing changed in your neck of the woods...that is, if no new roads, no new businesses (stores), churches, schools, etc. Then not much changed.

If you live in a growing area, then most of the street changes through about the first quarter of this year are there (or they are in my area) as are new shops, schools, eating establishments, etc.

There is no public list of all that changed, but essentially, it is the kind of changes you see from one map to a newer map.
