All I'm trying to do is to make a route from home to a place where I go for my bike race on Friday. I studiously set about trying to avoid the freeway and use lots of vias through villages and small towns to force it to do so. Result: the stupid, effing, useless, bloody incompetent thing still routes me to the very freeways I'm trying to avoid! Even though I've marked them for 'avoidance' in the settings.

Now, if I could only plan my routes in MapSource and upload them, that would be wonderful indeed. Come on, Garmin. Don't waste time giving us negative improvements to tracklog colours when you could be putting the effort into a patch that lets us upload routes. PLEASE GARMIN, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

There are times when I hate the iQue. Tonight is one such evening, Oy-vey!

Frustrated, and deeply pained. :) :p

I'm just excited to see that you have it back and driving you nuts. ;)

Badly done, iQue, badly done!

You are right CC, I did not have far to go, as I'm still at home. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

And you didn't set it to calculate a route for a bicycle and not a car?

I don't trust it whatever it's set to. The stoopid thing once routed me onto a freeway whilst in pedestrian mode. Doh?

OK, so I'm still a "novice" user but.. When playing with Betty, I once set her to show "Shortest route". She avoided highways like the plague.
This could be the solution...

The thing about the 'avoid' settings is that they are not absolutes. I think it was Anders who mentioned that avoid means 'avoid if possible' but it's not a 100% exclusion. That's what I tried last night, and I had to use the inclusion of several vias to 'nudge' it away from the freeway.

Eventually I gave up. I'll stick to the freeway and take my chances. This is one of the few things that really pissed me off about the iQue. I should be telling it what I want, not what it wants to impose upon me. It's a pain around Crawley as the presence of the M23/M25 means you have to work hard to go other ways. The iQue should have simplified that - it did not!

Yet, when I did the same sequence of events (almost) in MapSource, I ended up with the perfect route, but what's the point? The iQue and MapSource are divorcees. Divorcees probably still talk to each other, but not those two. If they could have thrown the effort into uploading routes as they did in giving us a mostly irrelevant tracklog colour, we'd all have been better off.

I had previously, in a different thread, suggested you use the "detour" feature but you thought it was too much trouble. IMO, the "detour" feature, when applicable, is much simpler then coming up with a bunch of waypoints to route around the particular road.

Conclusion: Bokkie has "detour" set to "avoid". :D

Corollary: Bokkie has 'avoid' set to 'avoid'!
