Dictionaries

Does anyone know how well various dictionaries work with MemPlug and PiDirectII, and how comprehensive they are:

1) Noah Lite + WordNet-based dictionary
2) PalmReader Pro + Webster's Vest Pocket Dictionary
3)Franklin Reader + Webster's Vest Pocket Dictionary
4) BDicty + English Lexicon
5) RoadLingua + WordNet1.6
6) other?

I also heard that WordNet is not a full dictionary, but a liguistic word collection that groups certain words that have similar meaning. This would make it hard to distinguish some words from similar words. That would be "double plus un-good".

I have tested the NOAH line of products and the BDicty line on the card running under PiDirect. Both worked without fault.

I tried Noah Lite with PiDirect and got a crash. I'll give it another try.

Which do you like better?

I tested these two for a family member and I did not really look too deeply into the quality of the content. The Noah lite was simple and straight forward, I recommended that to the young relative.
I have found that the BDicty has a number of uses. I have a Bible Dictionary that uses the BDicty reader and I like the concept and the exceution very much.
When I get back in the office in the am I'll load Noah again and make sure that I used PiDirect to launch and not MegaLauncher. It has been about 6 months.

John is right about Noah Lite. It only gives synonyms of the words, no actuall definitions. it still works for me, though.

I tried Noah Lite again. And had no crash or other problem in PiDirect or in MegaLauncher. I moved it back and forth twice from the Launcher Folder to PiDirect and the reverse.
Be sure that PiDirect is disabled when you load Noah to the PiDirect folder on the card.

Thanks for the follow up. Luckily I don't have any apps that can move a file from RAM to CF without disabling PiDirect.

Last time I tried, Noah Lite did not like accessing the dictionary from CF, in the PiDirect directory.

Maybe I will turn off hacks before trying again. I only use two.

Hacks and PiDirect seem to get along well most of the time. Of course there are a lot of hacks and are very unstable.

Your right about many file managers disabling PiDirect. I thought of that just after sending my last post. I had loaded directly to the card using SyncWizard and it did in fact crash. The next time and used SyncWizard to load directly into the Launcher Directory on th card. I used McFile to move the two files around for the test.

I have used Noah Lite and Road Lingua, both with PiDirect II. Road Lingua seemed to be much faster, even with the large dictionary. I have also run both programs just from the card without putting PiDirect into the mix; also worked very well, with Road Lingua having a considerably faster search speed. To me, the speed advantage of Road Lingua was sufficient to justify the price.

I use both BDicty and PIDirect II, but I note that you do not need to have PiDirect in order to place the lexicons on SD card.

When you place the lexicons to \Beiks\BDicty\ , BDicty will automatically see it. This will let you run BDicty without relying on PiDirect (unless you want to place the actual program [67k] itself on SD card)

I like BDicty for the fact you can call it up within other applications, but to be honest I have not use other dictionaries so do not know if other dict's will do same.

As for PiDirect, if you use it with a file manager (I use Filez) you can configure PiDirect to be disabled when you call Filez up, then enable as you exit Filez.

When you place the BDicty lexicons to \Beiks\BDicty\, you should open the media preferences of BDicty and set it to search on the Card for lexicons. Otherwise it will not work.
