I know I am about to ask a stupid question in the eyes and minds of many, but here goes, it might, finally, explain some 'mishaps' I had with some appointments. I am HotSync'ing to both my home AND my work PC. Sometime the appointment is entered on one of the PCs, sometime it's enterd on the IQue. Is the data transfered, during HotSync, EXCLUSIVELY in the direction dictated by the HotSYnc set-up (handeld to PC or vice versa) or there is a date associated with every new data and the most recent one is being added to the system where it does not yet exist?

Depends on the settings but in general, using the defaults, it syncs both ways. So if you add an appointment to both, they should both be there after syncing.

From the Hotsync help file:

A HotSyncŪ operation is a two-way synchronization of records between your handheld and your computer. Changes that you make on your handheld or your computer are updated on both platforms after a HotSync operation. A HotSync operation backs up all your data and only synchronizes the changed portions of data, reducing the time it takes to complete a HotSync operation.

To add to the Great Cat: if you are syncing to 2 PC's and one device the only thing you really need to worry about is the clock's are as close to sync'd as possible. Besides the date stamp, of course it is time stamped for sync purposes.

To both, thank you for your prompt replies. Then what is the difference between setting the " Desktop overwrites handheld" and "Handheld overwrites Desktop" in the HotSync customization?

If you were to set each conduit individually to Handheld overwrites Desktop then items you've changed on the PC would be overwritten by the Handheld each time. And vice versa.

However you have to have each conduit set as such and the default is for them to sync.

The "system" setting is always set for the Handheld to Overwrite the desktop and I recommend you leave it as such. Items change on the handheld each time you make additions to any file or program. These need to be backed up and usually what is modified is the Saved_Preferences.prc file. It contains most of the system information for each individual device and also contains the devices user name and hotsync settings etc.

On the same subject: My PC crashed and lost all my info, and I reloaded all my Garmin programs. If I sync my IQUE, I'm afraid the sync might erase everything in my handheld. Has anyone had any experience with this? Will the sync work?

As a precaution, I will set my sync to send info from the handheld to the PC, but is this necessary?

If you use the default settings you'll be fine. A hotsync exchanges data to and with and knows what needs to be pulled down or sent up. If you have nothing on the desktop, you will have after the hotsync.

The presence of nothing in the desktop is no precursor that destroys something on the iQue. Does that make sense?

 :)

Bokkie is correct......the installation of the desktop software to a new PC will cause the Que to exchange it's information to that desktop.

You can of course, for piece of mind, set all of the conduits to have the Handheld overwrite the desktop. And actually I would recommend this to avoid possible duplications.

The pre 4.0 Palm Desktop would not necessarily "restore" correctly but since the inception of 4.0 and more so with 4.1....all of your data should be restored upon the first sync to the desktop from the handheld without worry.
