Hi,

I just bought my first PDA, a Tungsten E, and I am unable to load the software that came with it onto my computer.
I recently upgraded my computer to Windows XP (service pack 1) and bought a new harddrive (although the old harddrive is still in place as a slave drive). I have downloaded and installed the updates within the past couple of weeks. The new harddrive with XP as the OS on it is the "F:\" drive, and the old harddrive is the "H:\" drive; I have nothing in the "C:\" position since Windows won't let me reassign the letter of the main harddrive (i.e. rename the "F:\" drive as the "C:\" drive.)
When I insert the Palm software installation CD into my CD-Rom, I first click on "English"; the window then tells me that "Setup wizard will help you install palm desktop software on your computer; click next to begin"; it does not allow me to select where I want to install the software. After I click on 'next', a window titled "Palm Desktop Installer Information" appears with the message "Error 1327.Invalid Drive C:\"; after closing that
window (no other options are available), the InstallShield Wizard window tells me that installation is not complete and I should retry; the only option available in that window is to click on 'Finish', which closes the window.

I tried to install the program via the "Add/Remove Programs" in the control panel of the computer, but I keep getting a message that it cannot find the installation program (despite the fact that the disk is in the CD-Rom drive).

I emailed the support centre at palmone, but they told me it was a Microsoft problem, not their problem (it will be their problem when I take the PDA back for a refund!!)

Any advice???

I know just how you feel. I've spent the last 26 hours messing around with this same problem and after spending hours with Microsoft, got the same answer from Palm. There's quite alot of info out there about system registries and such, but my opinion is that the software developer's at Palm "hardcoded" the path of the target directory (c:/). Now that may be wrong, but I got so frustrated I took a hard drive out of my old computer that had crashed, which was labled "C:/", put it in as a slave, and installed Desktop in 5 minutes. No Problems, no error's.

Might I suggest, trying to reassign your slave drive to "C:/"? Not sure if it will let you, but it's worth a try

Seeing that I have already got my palm software installed, I was not able to follow the steps you mention because it comes up with a "Modify" and "Repair" selection etc, but I think I understand your problem.

I think that palm only allows you to install the files onto the a drive called C:\. You can create a C:\ by using a virtual drive creator program. http://www.j-a-associates.com/vdc.htm have a free program that allows you to do this. When you do (I have not used this program before but it has won many awards), create a drive with around 300mg of disk space, so that you can install other palm things there later on (if nessesary). This would be the second option I'd choose.

The first options would be to reset your computer, creating a C:\ instead of F and H. Of course you probably wouldn't want to do this so the above option is likely to work. If there are any more problems feel free to ask me!

When I bought an Tung. E, there were no install problems for us, and we have a C:\. Try my suggestions and see if they work.
