As of about 1:30 PM today, my 5mx has refused to turn on. I tried new batteries, connecting to AC adapter, adjusting contrast, everything. It's just dead. It happened really suddenly too - and it's never been dropped or treated harshly in any way for the 3 months I've had it. It just stopped working all of a sudden. It's got all my class notes on it and I haven't backed up (stupidly) in about a month. Anyone know what might be wrong? Anyone know how I can retrieve the data? For now I'll be using my old Diamond Mako at school (unfortunately its kinda hard to study when all your previous notes are on a dead machine ) and unless I can find a remedy for my 5mx's condition I'll be asking for a Dell Axom or other low-end PPC for X-mas. To my dead brain (5mx) - I salute you :(
you say you have tried new batteries - presumably you have left the backup battery in so as not to lose your important (un-backed-up, tst, tsk) data?
First thing I'd try then in a soft reset - instructions are in the manual or in my FAQ at the URL below. If this doesn't help, it is possible that the 5mx is turning on, but the screen is failing to operate. If this is the case, you may be able to do a backup even if you can't see the screen. Once again, the routine to follow to do this is given in my FAQ.
Give those couple of things a go, and let us know how you get on...

I did get it working eventually - a hard reset did the trick. I tried a soft reset and nothing, but the hard reset seemed to work. Like I said in my previous post, I hadn't backed up in about a month, so I lost about a months worth of data, but otherwise it is fine now. Thanks for your help!

Hi gwiz
Glad to hear that the 5mx wasn't dead after all, but sorry about the lost data, of course. Could you not just beam your daily work across to the Mako as an easy backup? I'm assuming you still have the Mako?

I restored the data from my last backup (which was about 1 month ago) and then I beamed the newer data from my Mako (I used my Mako for the period that I presumed the 5mx to be dead) so now I'm kinda up to date except there is a one month gap in my data.
