I have just returned from Fuertaventura and whilst on holiday I found that I could receive email with out any problem but could not send any mail. I kept getting the error message conection timed out. On returning back to the UK I found that the mail that I could not send from abroad went out no problem back here at home.
I was using a freeserve conection which allways conected with out any hitches.
5mx and Motorola L7089
Any advise welcome
Best regards,

I had exactly the same problem when trying to use Freeserve for sending e-mail from Spain, as did a friend of mine. FS would not discuss it as they say they "do not support Psion".
I solved it by changing my ISP. Simple! :D

I found that I could receive email with out any problem but could not send any mail. In order to send mail with Freeserve, you must connect to the internet with Freeserve and your phoneline must send CLID (Calling Line IDentification), the system that lets you dial 1471 and get the number. If you are connecting from abroad, you are almost certainly not sending a valid CLID and Freeserve will not send your outgoing messages, although you can still get any incoming mail.

Julie, Mike many thanks for the replies to my question. Julie, which ISP did you change to and do most ISPs use caller line identificastion or is this just some thing mainly used by freeserve.
I am trying to save myself the hassle of having to set up various ISPs so that I might find one that works for me next time I am abroad.
Best regards,

After shopping about quite a bit for ISPs, I opted for PlusNet, as they seemed to have the most comprehensive all-in-one solution for me. They were helpful, and also did not wince when I mentioned the word "Psion". ;) I needed a reasonably priced ADSL provider, which would also include an 0845 number for use on the Psion (some charge extra for that). PlusNet also provide webmail on the same username from which you can access any POP3 mailboxes.
I found this catered for all my needs on my last two trips to Spain. E-mail was totally reliable - both receiving and sending - on the Psion. The webmail was useful on occasions when I had access to a PC - I was able to delete anything unimportant, but leave everything else on the server so that it ultimately downloaded to my own PC once back in England. It seems to be the perfect solution for me.
Another possible option for e-mail abroad is to use GPRS, bypassing the need to use your ISP. You would be able to send mail out, and would also be able to access your normal Freeserve POP3 box. However, this is another whole topic in itself - setting it up can be a bit complicated (and expensive if you don't already have a suitable phone) and it then depends upon whether the country you are visiting has a GPRS roaming agreement with your UK provider, amongst other things.
Overall, I would say a change of ISP is the simpler solution.
Hope that helps
Julie

I have used my Series 7 in France to receive and send e-mails via TescoNet. I did get a few Timeout messages but put those down to the lines being busy - usually I got through at the next attempt.

<<<phoneline must send CLID (Calling Line IDentification)>>> I am with claranet and traveling abroad soon (Czech, Last time I was over there I easily opened a Czech Tiscali ISP account and used that) and would like to try using Clara via international call, do you know if it will work as in does clara require CLI.
I think I need to read up on what exactly GPRS is Julie (recommend a good site for literature on the subject for beginners) as I could not follow the post that a way round the problem was to use GPRS as it does not go through an ISP. I have this option with my phone but have not bothered activating it as the usual GSM works good enough for my monile email requirements.

would like to try using Clara via international call, do you know if it will work as in does clara require CLI. I'm not sure. My 24/7 package is with Claranet and that obviously needs to send CLID because it only works with the phone number which has been registered.
You can try it for yourself using Claranet's London number and prefixing it with 141 to withhold your CLID. Enter in your Internet settings (with 'smart' dialling unchecked) 14102079055151 or 14102079056161. The real test is not whether you can connect (which shouldn't be a problem) but whether you can send mail with Claranet's relay.clara.net mail server.

I think I need to read up on what exactly GPRS is GPRS is a direct connection to the internet via your phone's network provider. You don't dial up to an ISP, you just establish an "always on" GPRS connection and then pay for the amount of data transferred instead of the time you are connected.
The mechanics of the thing actually means the Psion has to dial a 'number' and this number is generally *99#. I'm with Orange, so to send mail with a GPRS connection, I must use the smtp.orange.net mail server, although I still retrieve incoming mail from pop.clara.net.
GPRS is also generally a high speed data tranfer system but the speed does depend on network traffic (and I have read that voice calls take precedence over data calls when the system is busy).

Miek, sorry about that I seemed to have missed your reply to my question about using clara abroad (think the browser jumped stright to your second reply).
RE: <<<You can try it for yourself using Claranet's London number and prefixing it with 141 to withhold your CLID>>>
As ever Mike you are spot on with the right answer (and in a way obvious test which is probably why I could not see it as I was probably looking for something complicated). I followed your advice - besides accidently putting 1471 instead of 141 for the first few attempts) and it works perfectly sending emails via my mobile witholding CLI, using relay.clara.net so I guess that means it will work from an international call as well.
thanks again Mike
