Is there a 'plug in' or add on to the calender that will give me a find or search function for looking for historical data?

There's a built-in "Find" function (Start-Find) , it does not work very well, but you can try it out, you may have better luck with it. Otherwise you need 3rd party PIM applications such as Pocket Informant or Agenda Fusion to have full search capability.
