Hi all of a sudden my mx refuses to "see" the main batteries. it says 'batteries not present" and refuses to turn on. it works normally with the power adaptor. any ideas, anyone?

It sounds like a hardware fault - damaged connection from the batteries - but try backing up and hard resetting to see if that makes any difference. If not, it will be a repair job.

I read about it on a dutch forum and they suggest it is indeed a hardware failure....
Sorry

Is there any way to open the unit up and check the battery connections?

yes, check my FAQ at the URL below for links to a number of dismantling guides. I've done it myself, and its not too hard to do. The tricky bits I found were levering off the rear shroud, and that there is a small piece of loose plastic that holds one of the battery springs in place that is tricky to put in the right place when reassembling.

There is a flexible circuit with four tracks going from the battery compartment that carries the speaker and battery connections to the main circuit board.
This can sometimes become displaced and cut/broken when the stylus is re-inserted into its housing.
If there are no beeps when you switch on with external power connected, it is most likely that the flexi has become broken and will need to be replaced.
It is not impossible that the cable may have worked out of the connector at the circuit board end in which case re-connecting things will solve the problem!

Good luck!
