I just found something claiming to be an IRDA fix for Psions, which can currently be got free from:
http://www.psipoc.net/downloads/downloads.html

1. Does anyone have any experience of using it, and any idea what exactly does it fix? I believe it only 'resets' the auto switch-off timer, rather than actually curing the 30-minute bug.

2. How's this for wierdness? The author was at one point offering the source code to his fix for sale for 6000 pounds! See for yourself using:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache:hbjm2AkD0wAJ:psipoc.net

(For some reason www.archive.org does not have it.)

3. He now appears to be contemplating selling it instead:

Chris,

As far as I can tell, the IRDA "fix" does indeed only reset the off timer to three minutes. He claims it fixes or patches other files but I can't find any evidence of this although it must do something because it makes e-mail syncronization not work until you reopen e-mail to recreate the MBM file. I don't know what the original objective of the program was but it doesn't seem to do anything to fix the 30 minute bug that you can't do manually and messes about with files in ways that don't seem helpful.

Anyone got any updates on this? Any other gotchas? I'm assuming that once the files have been patched then you don't need to keep the app. on your system, right? Assuming you've got everything backed up then even a hard-reset won't matter...
