I'm trying to download some files that will only go to the SD card. That is, that's where they're automatically put when I run Install, and it won't let me change the destination. When I HotSync, I get a message which says that there is no application on my handheld to open these files. What does this mean and how can I fix it?

What type of files are you installing onto your SD card?

Zip and... lnk? I have Winzip on my desktop. Do I also need to install it on my Palm? I'm new to this, obviously. Any advice would be much appreciated.

WinZip is for your PC only. You can copy it to your memory card, but it won't do any good there and would only take up space. Use WinZip on your PC to extract (or unzip) the file(s) from the downloaded file. (I would place the extracted files in a unique folder or subdirectory.) Once the files are extracted, look for a readme.txt file, a *.doc file, or a *.html file and open it if one is present. That should give directions re which programs to install. Most will have the extension *.prc or *.pdb. You can install them by double-clicking the filename and it should automatically call up the Palm Installer. In the Palm Installer, you can direct the file to be installed to your Palm's RAM or to your SD card. Hopefully, the instructions will tell you the recommended place to install. Good luck! Write back if I was unclear or if I can be of more help.

Thanks, OldBlue, for your help. I unzipped the files and tried again to download them. It worked for installing files on the Palm, but there are others (e.g., Bejeweled.lnk, Alphafonts.zip) that have SD card listed under "Destination" on the installer. How do I download directly onto the SD card? The installer won't allow the destination to be changed, or I would just put the files on the Palm and then move them to the card.

Bejeweled.lnk sounds like a LINK to a file, so that won't sync to your Palm at all. Neither will Alphafonts.zip, which is a zip file--you need to extract the Alphafonts.pdb file from the zip and sync that.

But you don't want to sync a font file to your card anyway, because it won't work... fonts need to be in RAM. (Make sure you have a Hack controller--HackMaster, X-Master, TealMaster, or EVPlugBase--and FontHack123 installed also.)

To change the install destination, in the Install Tool, click on the name of the file (to highlight it), then click Change Destination. Select whichever destination you want.

Thanks; that helps a lot. Is there a good source of general information for novices at this (other than message boards)?

RE: changing the destination. It doesn't work for these files. It automatically comes up as SD card, and when I try to change it, handheld is in gray; it doesn't highlight.

Try here - it may have some bits. I know I found it useful when starting out with expansion cards.
