As a relatively new S7 user i am a little confused. I have a S7 and a Psion Gold Card WAN Global 56k +fax. It is reasonable to assume that as both pieces of equipment are manufactured by Psion it would be relatively simple to interface them. I am unable to find any information ( that is ludite proof !and not written for a degree student ) as to how to get them connected.
Does anyone have the same setup ? or have i got to buy a new moden card ?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

P.S
If anyone has raised this before i appologise for my oversight

Hi Mesmer,

The Psion WAN 56k + Fax is supported by the 7, although can you confirm which build your OS is. To access this press ctrl+h when displaying a root directory (e.g. c: drive). There should be a build version number such as 751, 754 or 756.

If you have 756 then the Psion drivers required to operate this card are already installed. Switch off the machine and insert your card. When back on, click on the control panel and select modems. Set the Current Modem to Psion Gold Card Modem and click on the edit button. Settings should be as follows:

Name - Psion Gold Card Modem
Speed - 115200 baud
Connect via - PC Card
Fax Class - Auto

Loudspeaker in use - Until Call Answered (default value but can be set to anything)
Volume - Quiet (default but again can be set to anything)
Pause time for "," - 4 seconds

Init. (reset) string - AT&F

Flow Control - Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal Detect (DSR/DTR) - Ticked
Carrier Detect (DCD) - Ticked
Modem Type - Fixed Line

If all these settings are correct then your modem should work.

Whilst in the control panel, you will need to set up your Internet Connections and it may also be worth while entering 'Dialling' control panel option, to ensure your Home & Office settings are correct.

Hope this helps a little,

Let us know how you get on.

Interesting I have the Psion Gold card wan global PC card combine IT and though most of my settings are as above I had problems with the speed being set at 115200 with initialisatin at AT&F. It would not work but I found a site with a list of settings for card modems for use with the seven and their settings. The settings I found worked with mine (and here in the Falklands there is no faster conection unless you can afford to pay for a dedicated line) is set at 57600 with init AT&F+MS=11 all the rest the same as above as for the speaker well the card uses the psions speaker and changing the settings does nothing as far as I can tell! my sevens build is 756

Interesting. Comments. The settings I recorded here are the default settings that come with the OS (or when you perform a hard reset). Judging by what you have to say, looks like these are UK specific. Re your speaker settings. I set mine to 'never' as even on quiet, the windows start rattling when it trys to dial in !! lol

To echo WanMan's comment:"interesting" - Iwas until recently using a V.34 Gold Card (Imanaged to lay hands on a V.90 Gold Card), and depite having the speaker setting set to "never", it still drowned out the telly whenever it dialled out. The V.90 is a major improvement on the VS.34 as far as speed goes...

I also had no trouble with using the same AT&Finit string on the V.90 Gold Card as Idid on the V.34.

I assume these Init strings are only used when your Psion is about to dialup (i.e. you are trying to connect), rather than when the Psion itself is switched on??

Re speaker problem, I assume the modem uses the Psion's own speaker rather than one being inbuilt into the card? Could the fact that the init string was not working correctly, affect this??

I wish I understood how the OS influences these cards more as it may help me understand the Trible Beep Resets I am suffering with my 7book and V34 56K & V90 cards.

My understanding is that the init string is used only when you are going to set up a call with the modem, rather than when the computer powers up; this is based on using an external modem, which I tend to keep powered off until I want to use it (gives that extra touch of security against unauthorised dial-out... :) ).

Also, I agree that it will be the internal speaker in the Psion which makes the noise, because there's no speaker in the Gold Card ;).

I'm afraid I don't know the intimate details of how the OS controls the card modem, but I think the interface should be pretty much the same as any card modem (and not very Psion-specific, because the same Gold Card works equally well in a laptop PC with Win 95 and a different laptop PC with Win 98, as well as in the Psion). I wonder if there's something a bit marginal in your particular 7Book's PC card interface circuitry, which makes the reset line on the processor wiggle when it tries to initialise the card?

Cheers from New Orleans...

Thanks Ian for information.

I too thought it could be a problem with my 7book but not so sure now.

TBR problem now affects all three of my Psion Gold cards. This problem only occurs when they are inserted but not being used. The reset is also random sometimes immediately on startup (e.g. when alarm is triggered), sometimes after 30 secs or so and yesterday, 45mins into use !! The fact that my 7 did not suffer from this means that it is either a personality module caused problem or the v158OS.

Simon Wolf is also suffering from these TBR's when his combineIT card (post upgrade) is left inserted aswell, which makes me think it could well be an OS related problem rather than necessarily hardware.

Setting the modem speaker sound to "never" didn't work for me either--it screeched no matter what the setting. But I put M0 in the initialization string and the screech was effectively silenced.

Whilst I only have a V34+Fax Multifunction PC Card Gold Card, I too am using a series 7 (751) with a personality upgrade and the PC Card is in the Psion most of the time. I put the Personality upgrade in in early September. My card is silent and since the personality upgrade, I have not had any resets, unlike prior to the upgrade, when I was doing one on average a week. The card makes no noise on dialing and seems to work fine. I haven't sent a fax though.

I too, prefer to use an external modem, but so I can see what is happening, not for security though!

The settings I have which are fine are:
Modem speed 115200, connect via pc card, auto, never, quiet, 4, AT&F, blank, blank, Hardware (RTS/CTS), tick, tick, Fixed Line

Voila

Mesmer

I've followed the progress of this problem, and am glad to hear it is finally sorted. You were indeed fortunate to have Si's diligent assistance towards resolving it.

I'm still not quite clear what the final solution was, however, and would be interested to know.

I think the brain cells must be going, as now I remember that I read in another thread about the resolution of this problem and even replied to it - oh dear!

You seem on the ball to me Julie, spotting holidayers from Newbury :-) Thanks for all the support while away in Czech from Julie and others.

To echo jriemerm, I used to have the not being able to turn the sound off problem with my 3mx and pcmia adapter and solved it with the major help of MikeMc by adding I think it was also +M0, It made life a lot more pleasurable. (No trouble with the netbook though or the old 7 I used with the same Goldcard)

I used to have the not being able to turn the sound off problem with my 3mx and pcmia adapter and solved it with the major help of MikeMc by adding I think it was also +M0The command to set the speaker to "off" is ATM0 (the last character being the number zero) so M0 without a plus sign is added to the "Init (reset) string". If that doesn't work, ATM0 can be entered in the "Data string" as well.
