MHS 09-26-2004, 07:49 AM The Mapinstall program has to build the map file from its data files to install it on your iQue. Once built, it puts the file in your Install folder in your Palm folder so it will be installed at the next hotsync. Instead of hotsyncing, you can get that file and install it directly to the card using a card reader. You need to have the right folder structure on the card. You can build this by installing a small map to the card by hotsync, then use the card reader to install the larger file in its place. Mike maxb 09-26-2004, 12:59 PM In my case I already had some detailed maps on Internal Memory. So here's what I did: - open iQueMap and goto Delete menu from top menu - select Delete - Basemap in Memory - select Delete - Detailed maps in Memory - from Filez, delete GRMN_LOG file I did the above as I wanted to make sure I dont have detailed maps on both internal and external memory...and also to release storage on Internal memory. Not sure if this applies in YOUR CASE. However, you could do the following for what you SPECIFICALLY asked: - from Palm Desktop, create your map set using Map Install - open the 'Install' directory under the 'Palm' folder on your PC(e.g. on my PC it is --> C:/Program Files/Palm/K/Install) - **CUT** GMAPSUPP.IMG file - Paste GMAPSUPP.IMG file under 'GARMIN' folder on SD card (I am using a card reader) jrose1g 09-26-2004, 02:55 PM I think I must be missing the main issue here, but when I want to send a new set of maps to the card via the card reader, I use Mapsource, select the maps, then go to Transfer at the top and pull down the menu. I get a "select device" box where I can choose to transfer directly to the card reader. rocket666 09-26-2004, 04:37 PM Originally posted by jrose1g I think I must be missing the main issue here, but when I want to send a new set of maps to the card via the card reader, I use Mapsource, select the maps, then go to Transfer at the top and pull down the menu. It goes to the install directory waiting for the next hot sync. If you don't do a hot sync, you can move the file from the install directory to the card using a variety of tools. 1. card export II 2. filepc2pda 3. a separate card reader/writer If you are saying that mapsource lets you point the map output directory to the garmin directory on a usb card reader/writer, this makes sense because mapsource is a product separate from the ique and would need more options than to just transfer via a hot sync. jrose1g 09-27-2004, 08:38 AM If you are saying that mapsource lets you point the map output directory to the garmin directory on a usb card reader/writer Yes, that's what it does. For me that makes it a much better way than to use the MapInstall program. rocket666 09-27-2004, 11:09 AM I don't use mapsource to change my maps on the Q, rather I use mapinstall. From what I can tell, mapinstall is the program that comes with the Q, and mapsource is an extra program we can install on the pc. Can mapsource download to the Q directly (say if you don't have a separate card reader/writer). Or, say you don't have an sd card and want to send the maps to the internal memory on the Q. What is the advantage of using mapsource to construct your maps over using mapinstall? apersson850 09-27-2004, 02:36 PM Whether you use Mapinstall or Mapsource, they both try to compile a mapset and deliver it in a proper folder, so that it can be transferred on the next Hotsync. Both programs can prepare maps for download to internal as well as SD card memory. You're right about that Mapinstall is included, but Mapsource has to be downloaded and installed separately. Not for me, as I had Garmin GPS before getting the iQue. Thus, I had Mapsource before Mapinstall. I consider the user interface of Mapsource to be better than that of Mapinstall. jrose1g 09-27-2004, 07:58 PM Yes, that's what it does. For me that makes it a much better way than to use the MapInstall program. I stand corrected. Since I haven't used MapInstall since the first day I installed the software, I wasn't aware that you have the same choice in that program. However, it is still true that transferring to the card reader directly is much quicker than transferring via a HotSync. PDA Street
