Well here is my story. I was one of those poor sucks that bought a Toshiba E740 and I think it time to move on. What I would like know is the new Axim X30 worth it? I don’t want to buy another lemon. Does the OS and app’s utilize the new XScale chip and can the OS be upgraded? If anyone has any impute good or bad it would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks for you time!

Dell Axim X30 is a great value, right now the 624 MHz model with wifi and bluetooth is $297 and you can occationally find $30 off coupon. Comparing to other brands, you're getting a lot more. Some people do complain about the design. The 624 MHz model is among the fastest model right now, there's a review here.

There are also a board dedicated to Axim, you may want to take a look to see any specific issues.

As for OS update, Dell and HP do not offer upgrade to WM2003SE(ironically Toshiba did for some models), so the trend seems to be no major OS upgrade for these two brands.

Hi,

Maybe I've missed something but my Axim X30 is already on WM2003SE. FWIW, the upgrade is on the Dell support site, so it looks like you can upgrade the OS. Dunno enough about the chip specifics to answer that part, though.

BTW, I think it is a great bit of kit - I really recommend the wireless one: I use mine like a "walkman" around the house, listening to radio programmes I've missed during the day. It knocks spots off the only other PPC I've used - a Toshiba e310.

Might want to consider the bigger battery, though if you plan to do a lot of wireless with it.

HTH,
Andy

This is not about upgrade within the same version of OS. The previous model X5 has WM2003 and Dell does not provide upgrade to WM2003SE, when WM2005 comes out next year, based on this trend both Dell and HP will probably release new unit instead of providing upgrade for the current models.

Well it looks like I will have to do a little more research before I purchase. I would like to thank you all for the information that I have received so far.

Ah, I see your point. We can always try to persuade them to have a change of heart (he said in hope but without much confidence!). I guess it depends a lot on whether WM2005 is likely to require radically different hardware.

Anyway, I still think the Axim X30 is pretty good ;-)

Cheers,
