h4355 loses data

My hp h4355 is about 10 months old, but it has lost all the data on two separate occasions. The first time, it was not properly backed up, so I lost the contacts, calender, etc. This last time, my base computer will not recognize the Pocket PC, and only wants to sync as a Guest unit. How do I access my backup data, and why is it losing the data? My confidence level has greatly declined as far as using it for important data!

Are you keeping the unit charged up? Are you removing the main battery from the iPaq? Have you installed any new software or hardware?

A little slack on charging, but I am sure it was not discharged, especially the back-up power. No new software prior to losing the data.
At this point, I would like to know how to get the computer to recogize the Pocket PC as the primary and not just a guest.
