I created a test word document and excel workbook. I'm not sure how I did it, but I I did manage to get them onto my desktop pc with activesync. But when I double-click them on the desktop, they are are not recognised files. Is there something I need to do to convert them from ipaq format into one usable by word and excel?

Activesync will convert Word and Excel to and from desktop and Pocket formats for you when you sync the ipaq. Make sure you set it to do so on the activesync desktop (Tools-Options--Rules--Conversion). You can drop the files in My Documents folder in either ipaq or desktop, they will get synced to the other side automatically.
