As I understand it, if I remove the battery from my hx4700 I lose all data except for that which has been copied to the iPaq backup, or my SD card?
Is that correct?
All data and programs in memory are zapped except for the OS etc in rom?

There is a backup battery inside the ipaq (most models). It will let you remove or replace main battery without loss of data. You can remove main battery for a few minutes. If you leave it out too long and backup battery also runs out, the unit will hard reset and revert back to factory setting. All programs and date that you install and input will be lost, the OS and built-in programs in ROM and anything in File Store will not.

AD, I remember you talking about the File Store some time ago, now that I recall. In summary, is that synonymous with the iPaq backup that I see as a program icon?

No, ipaq backup is a backup application, File Store is a left over ROM space after OS usage. You can use File Store just like a storage card.

I see what you are getting at. If you want to get that onto your desktop, how would you link it to ActiveSync to suck-and-blow the data?

After you activesync, click explore on your desktop , you should see File store as another folder on your ipaq, regular tap and hold or drag and drop to copy and paste files still applies.

Looking at the Users Guide and the How Do I guide, which you can download from...

...if you can't find them on the companion CD...
They quite clearly state that the device will do soft reset when you remove/replace the battery... According to the Users Guide the backup battery will maintain your device for up to 15 minutes when fully charged...
