Is there some sort of Fugawi for beginners tutorial that tells me how the program works? I downloaded the demo and the help file is worthless and I have no idea where to start. I want to upload a scanned map into my IQue but am totally lost. Could someone please help me? Thanks!

The tutorial I got when I bought FUGAWI is a small book with instructions and so on.

The demo version only allows certain map files, I remember it was bmap.

For transferring a map to iQue you got to callibrate that map, then you are able to transfer, but previously you got to have the FUGAWI soft and a Conduit on your iQue.

There is a sample of a FUGAWI map on my iQue.

thanks for the info holgado, but could you please describe a little more how i go about doing the first step of opening the .bmp map in fugawi? file/open? or file/import? or something else? i can't figure this out! thanks!

FUGAWI. File/Calibrate a map and you got to import the map to be calibrated.

Calibrating a map you got to know the Datum, the Projection and the parameters (Zone). Then you have to give the coordinates of four points, as separeately as possible, it is recommended to be the four square of the map.
The calibrating parameters automaticaly calculate a % deviation, it has to be near 1-2% to be precise.

As soon as it has been calibrated you got to save the map and then you get the option of transfering to your PDA, which takes a few minutes depending on the file.
The map is transfered to the internal memory of your PDA, so you have to transfer it to the SD card on the FUGAWI menu.

Would be nice if someone could write a laymans terms easy to understand guide for this, I've looked at what Holgado has said but still find it impossible to put into practice, thats why I have shelved my Fugawi until I can find an easy to understand step by step guide. Maybe it could then become a sticky for future reference.?

my thoughts exactly alanj! i've since downloaded the pathaway demo....pathaway is much more intuitive in my opinion. i figured out how to load and calibrate a scanned in map without any help. now, as for fugawi, i still don't even have the program loaded onto my Ique because the documentation is so awful. my advice: use pathaway instead!

pathaway is great, much easier too use.

We use mutlimap at work which is a pity because it doesn't link with the palm.
If I was really sneaky I guess I could I could grab a Screenshot of a map in multimap and calibrate it in pathaway.
But obviously I'm not that sneaky so I don't!

The Fugawi UK software is naff, in that you can only use the supplied OS maps, unless I missed something when looking at my mates copy on his PC.

I agree with you, FUGAWI is not easy to begin with, also its Technical help was so uncertain.

Been working with OziExplorer for so much time that it helped with FUG, but had a lot of problems for starting and then with maps that even I thought for a moment of giving off.

Now I am quite happy with FUGAWI, which is the complete version, not the UK.

So you have to work hard to get started and learn yourself, thats a pity for you pay some bucks for the program.

I work with Fugawi too and I'm very happy with it. But I can imagine that it looks difficult in the beginning.

first start with a familiar small papermap that you scan yourself. Take e.g. your own area. Make small size maps with high definition for areas you want to walk, try to keep the map size around 1Mb or less and if you want a bigger area than simple take another scan and don't bother if it overlaps or not Fugawi finds the right map. Then open Fugawi and via File-calibrate open your map. If you are sure of the map datum just put it in. If not just enter 'Equidistant Cylindrical projection'. Now open your iQ garmin and search for the same area. look for intersections or corners in rivers or bridges that you can see in both Fugawi (PC) and iQ. check with your pointer for the standard coordinates in the iQue. (check that the coordinates are in degr.mm'.ss.s") now put the pointer of the (PC) fugawi map on the same spot and put the found coordinates in the opened box lat/long. be sure to put the right North-South East-West indication. Repeat this for at least four of five spots not too close near eachother. then name it logically with a small name and save. This is your first calibrated map.

To send it to the iQ you first have to look how much space is left on the iQ's internal memory. free up as much as you need. (most of the time 4-5Mb is sufficient) In (PC)fugawi go via file-open to your map and open the map. via Edit-Export selection to PDA you can prepare the map for synchronisation. Synchronise. this can take a while if this is a map over 1Mb.

Once finished open Fugawi on the iQue. From the toptoolbar open 'Maps' and choose 'map'. you will see your map in the list. Choose the map and press 'move' this moves the map to the card. (there is no other way!) this also may take a while. Then again choose the map and open it. If the map looks ok you probably have your first map ready for use.

If you are in the area with your antenna activated the white map will automatically find the map and puts the pointer. You can toggle between Garmin and Fugawi maps and even set a route in garmin and switch back to fugawi. The turnviews of garmin will pop-up in fugawi as usual and go to reveal the fugawi map again. that's easy. From the toptoolbar via 'GPS' tap InfoBar for info on mapsize, speed etc.

if this helps: next time: routing and navigating.

wow...that was EXCELLENT....thanks for the all the great info and help NS1007!! That was actually the first post that I found in this forum relating to Fugawi that made sense to me.

I do have one question though: how do I load the actual Fugawi program onto my IQue? Note that I only have the demo right now, so maybe I'm not able to do this until I fork out 100 bux to buy the product (??).

I've read that Fugawi doesn't really allow you to calibrate maps once you've gotten them loaded into the IQue as does Pathaway (Pathaway lets you "nudge" maps around if your calibration is a little off). Is this correct? If not, how do you do it?

Thanks for all the great help and hopefully we'll all get a dose of your Fugawi 101 Session #2!

open the PC Fugawi app. from the toolbar : Tools-install Palm files.

that will set the palm files (2x) ready for synchronising. Then synchronise.

if you are able to understand some German have a look at Fugawi.de (http://www.fugawi.de).
The 'Fugawi Online Hilfe' section is quite good. It shows with moving images the things you need to do to perform specific actions.

No, you cannot adjust the calibrated map in the iQue. But you can easily adjust maps in the (PC) Fugawi. Note that for the EU you can buy the Fugawi digital maps I-IV (set of 4=100euro) with all the detailed information on roads even the smaller ones. You cannot load them as a map, but you can check overlay them over your map and check your calibrated maps quality and adjust. The streets are even more accurate than Garmins latest.. Your challenge exercise is to calibrate from a topo map with topo map datum.. but I can help with that too. Note that you can add the height data on your map for free via a NASA controlled database. (toptoolbar in PC fugawi: Help-getting elevation data and follow the instructions then press F10). http://www.fugawi.com/docs/ded.html

hope this helps,
