Recently heading west from Michigan on I-94 NW to Chicago (see the next post for image), iQue routed me to take I-90, which is a toll road and marginally shorter in distance compared to non-toll hwy I-94/I-80 W+N that I decided to take.

Once I move off-route by not taking I-90, iQue started prompting me to take every exit that I came across in I-94/I-80, make a U-turn and go back to I-90. Even at the I-94 N section, to which I-90 eventually merges into, the iQue kept prompting me to take the next exit and move back to the original I-90.

Finally, while still moving, I stopped the navigation, and created a new route still heading to the same destination from where I was in the I-94 N section. Everything was ok thereafter, it did not route me through I-90, which it was trying to do earlier. Therefore my conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with the routing algorithm for recalculated route once you move off-route. I have encountered similar off-route prompts in other areas too.

I believe that one of the preferences is to avoid toll roads.

I agree that the route chosen by the software is not always the same as you would choose. Not much can be done about that other than try to reroute through a specific location / road, etc.

Set your route preferences to avoid toll roads.

And yes, sometimes there is a conflict between "fastest" and "shortest" route. Just eyeballing the map you posted, I-90 appears to clearly be the shortest route (it's a diagonal or hypotenuse of a triangle vs. the other routes which are the 2 sides of the same triangle)

And yes, many times it seems stubborn trying to get you back to your original route. However, there is also an option to "recalculate" on the Routing display area. That usually makes it rethink the entire route, not just trying to get you back on your original route.

Another way to avoid that is to use "vias" to force it to use a particular route.

There are quirks in the routing. If I tell it to route me from Denver to Tucson, AZ. It takes me down I-25 to I-10 and then over I-10 to Tucson. That's cool. But if I tell it to route me to a spot ON I-10 right over the AZ border from NM, it takes a much different route to go from I-25 to I-10 through Silver City, NM. The only difference in the two locations is Tucson is about 100 miles further down the road from the exit I want.

Very weird.

In preferences, Guidance, you can set "Off Route Recalculation" to silent. This will turn off the annoying "Off route, recalculating" message. If you disagree with Betty about the route, you can push the "recalculate route" icon in the Que routes screen once you have committed to your way, and usually the new route will agree with your choice. The routing program will try to get you back to the original route until you tell it to recalculate.

I have experienced navigation error quite a few times with the Ique, such as instead of turning right, the voice prompt me to turn left. The street number of my home is completely wrong ( the number does not exists on my street). I try to pay attention to the road sign, and not rely on the Ique completely. However, overall, the direction provided by navigation prompt is not too bad.

I've run into similar situations, but it was attributable to not having all the detailed maps loaded for the area or route in question. If you have even the smallest area missing, the Que will do all kinds of crazy things as you mentioned.
