Does the series 7 support better applications in sheet or word ie. merging cells other functions etc or are these basically the same as 5mx but in colour! Why upgrade to S7 go on sell it to me!!

The 5mx and S7 both use the same operating system and run the same built-in applications - there are no additional features in Word and Sheet with the S7.

I certainly can't "sell it to you" because, at the time the S7 and netBook were launched, I felt that a budget laptop offered better value for money and went down that route. Now a colour screen 5mx would have been superb, but alas it was not to be...

This is the conclusion I have nearly reached as you have confirmed the colour screen is the only real difference between them.

I agree up to a point. The S7 only really has a larger, colour screen better keyboard and a faster processor over the S5. A netBook is a whole different kettle of fish.

Whilst it looks the same as the 7, its key difference is that you can upgrade the OS. This means that the netBook now supports wired and wireless ethernet and has Opera included instead of Psion Web.

Much more expensive than a 7, but since you can buy the netBook 'personality module' from www.expansys.com for £65......

I believe a fundamental difference between 7 and netBook though is that the PCMCIA slot on the 7 cannot provide sufficient power to run an ethernet card and this must be a major disadvantage for many users.

I suspect that there is actually very little difference in the PCMCIA current limiting circuitry between the Netbook and the Seies 7.

We already know that both machines now share the same PWB. I guess that there's a link or zero ohm resistor to tell the machine that its either a Netbook or a Series 7. And I also suspect that the difference in current limiting is done with a single surface-mount resistor. Just need somebody to do a comparison between the two motherboards.

I have no doubt that Psion knobbled the Series 7 for marketing reasons, to try and ensure that Netbook sales were not dented by customers buying 'cheap' Series 7s ! One day the likes of Psion (and Sony) will realise that deliberately knobbling your expensive products is a good way of handing your business to the competition. Products need to be all singing all dancing at their launch. In this business you rarely get a second chance to make amends for ****-ups.

I've got a Netbook to play with, just need to get hold of a cheap Series 7 motherboard. Anyone got a faulty Series 7 motherboard ? Or better still the schematics for the two PWBs ?

Incidentally I purchased my second Netbook from a reputable seller on Ebay, only to find that a previous owner had replaced the Netbook operating system card with a Series 7 operating system card. Doh ! Can't be many people running a Netbook at 131Mhz. Got my order in at Expansys. Note that the expected shipping date for the Expansys Netbook cards is still 10 days...

ps. Nice to see the 'archive' of this board has returned from the dead. Well done PDAStreet.

And if I were responsible for the marketing and production of the S7 & Netbook, I 'd simply make both motherboards identical - and simply say there was a difference!

I've got a personality unit on order too so we'll soon find out for sure!

Personally I'm more than happy with my series 7 - though I wait with anticipation for my personality module and the hope of a network connection...

I got it as a replacement for a series 5 when the screen cable went on me - picked it up for <250 on ebay in immaculate condition...

Advantages? Instant on time, long battery life, keyboard that I can type 80+wpm on (great for taking notes in lectures), more than adequete web browsing / email when combined with a gprs phone, small and light enough to slip unnoticed into my bag (though it is maybe a little more bulky than I'd like...), I couldn't afford a decent laptop! It's a superb machine for playing spectrum games on (!)

Sure it is basically just a big 5mx with colour - but the difference in the keyboard this produces makes this more than worthwhile imho

Absolutely the S7 is a big 5MX - but what a machine that is too! When you add Neuon nConvert http://www.neuon.com/apps/nconvert/ to give you two way conversion to access to RTF, MS Excel & Access and several graphics formats with embedded file recognition for email, plus MBM View http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/platodva/MBMView.htm for direct viewing of Graphics files such as jpeg
PDF reader http://www.mbrainsoftware.com/
phone management with phoneman pro http://www.zenobyte.com/phonemanpro/index.html

.......... and all this with a decent screen and keyboard --- makes for a real alternative to a bulky/heavy/ expensive laptop.

And if you can get one cheaply on ebay then it's even better. Well worth it!!!!
