I'm a new user from Limerick Ireland
A kind gentleman has sent not only a Palm IIIc but a portable keyboard, palm pics camera and international charger AND paid for the postage from Florida to Limerick, Ireland. Let me say THANKYOU, THANKYOU, and THANKYOU. My wife however has some reservations about the new love of my life, but she is warming as she sees some of the apps.
So a couple of questions,
Can I assume that the cradle charger requires an input of 5.00VDC and 1.0A regulated and go out and buy a 'transformer' (I'm a civil engineer not electrical) with a suitable jack. The international charger connects directly to the IIIC. Are there any dangers with this approach?
Any tips for increasing hotsync speed the serial link to Com1 only works up to speeds of 19200, painfully slow sometimes.
Still very happy altogether

What is the input listed on the AC adapter? If it says 100-240V, then go ahead and use it. You have 220V over there?
I don't know about a IIIc adapter. My info says the charge protection circuit is in the IIIc:

I have a Prism and an m500. Their chargers cool down when they get fully charged. I don't know if there is smart controller in their adapters. Other adapters in my house stay warm all the time. I would hesitate to use a standard 220VAC-5VDC transformer.
You can increase the serial port speed to 57,600. Go to: HotSync app, Menu/Options/Connection Setup... Pick Direct Serial. Press Edit. Press Details. At the top of the screen you will see Speed - pick 57,600.

Thanks John
Charging way merrily now.
I suspect the hotsync problem *may* be of a physical nature. I have tried your advice below but cannot establish a connection speed greater than 19200. Over that speed, no connection is established.

just to bug on about the hotsync speed: you might want to check the settings on your com port in windows as well, if in the system dialog or in some of the apps interfering with hotsync the speed has been limited it will not go any higher. is should be possible to reach a speed of 115.200 (may couse an overflow when transferring a lot at once) and 57.600 should at leats be possible.

Thanks Vollie
The Com 1 deafult setting is 9600 with my installation of windows XP. I have increased this to 115,200. I ahve also varied the connection speeds on the IIIc running OS 4.1 and Palm desktop 4.1. The controlling setting seems to be the connection speed in palm desktop.
However, still no joy over 19,200.

the odd thing here is that it always stops at 19.200 which in XP points toward the limitation of a server side client to client protocol that shouldn't be used. will give more info on this subject asap. or you might check the microsft knowledge database.

When I had Win95, serial HotSync speed was best at 57,600. If I set it higher in Win95 and in HotSync, it would go slower!
If you can't even pick 57,600 then I don't know what the problem is.

To deepen the mystery. I have recently upgraded from a Palm Pilot Proffesional (hand me down as well). The PPP cradle was plugged into exactly the same port in my computer using palm desktop 4.1, yet sync'd at 'as fast as possible' speed every time without error. I'm guessing it may be a physical problem with the IIIC connectors. But they look clean and this is purely speculation.
Cheers
Mark
And boy does it rain in the west of Ireland, to work in the dark, back home in the dark and grey all day.

Try the IIIc in the PPP cradle. The connector is the same as the III, which is the same as the PPP!:

Electrical noise can cause a COM port to slow down. (Errors cause data to get re-sent) I can't imagine a IIIc cradle generating much noise unless the adapter is really messed up. Perhaps try HotSyncing with the adapter unplugged.

If you are getting the "6410" lost connection messge you may benefit from installing the newest PalmDesktop software. Be sure to follow the uninstall process, you must correct the registry.
If I could I would send you some Florida Sun Shine but it is not allowed.
