Attached screenshot shows something I've never seen before. I recently reformatted my hdd and reloaded everything. I don't use Outlook or IE but I can't understand what activesync is telling me about the "sync status is on the device". I'm puzzled what this means. Any ideas?

It's not an error, that appears when you have server sync setup on a device.
If you are not syncing to an exchange server then you will need to either
open up activesync on the ppc and goto the server settings and uncheck both
items or if you have your device cradled you can goto Tools>Options and
uncheck "enable synchronization with a server". After you uncheck these
items and click ok, go back to the sync options in activesync( on desktop)
and make sure you check calendar and contacts sync.
