Hi. I just joined this forum in hopes that someone can provide more help than the useless palm support. Here's my system info: Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook running WinXP SP1. My palm is a Zire 72. I have no problem hotsyncing when I first install it, but every time after then, when I try to add a program, I get the message that: "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop was lost. Some of your data was NOT backed up. Please check your setup and try again" I get that for every program, even one's that are on the CD that came with the zire!!! Also, in the log, I always have an error 6140. I've included a sample log to follow to show you what is going on. Thanks everyone, I appreciate your help!

Hello mloose,

Paul from palmOne here. The first step you might take in troubleshooting this issue is to check palmOne's Knowledge Library article "'The connection between the desktop and your handheld was lost, some of your data was not backed up - 6410'" here (http://www.palmone.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=9657)
A specific laptop issue is also addressed in this article.

Hope that's of help.

Best

Paul

Hi Paul, thanks for your quick reply. I did not mean to bash all palmone support, I'm sure you're very good at your jobs, and I hope you didn't take offense to my caling it "useless." It's the process itself as it seems to be difficult to get past the basic solutions. As for the site you sent me to, I did indeed try that before. My laptop IR port is disabled, I've tried to reducing the hotsync speed, I've check all my connections. To no avail. Is it possible that I have a defective piece of hardware? Any other suggestions? Thanks a ton, I appreciate it.

I don't know the steps that you've done so far but here are the things that usually work:

1. Do a soft reset on your Zire 72.

2. Uninstall and then reinstall the Palm Desktop

3. Connect directly to a USB port if you're using a hub

4. Plug the cable into a different USB port and see if Windows locates the Palm and installs the drivers.

Since the hotsync is working but not the install, this may also be a problem with Windows not properly associating Palm program extensions with the Install program. I find it much easier to use Pilot Install, which you can get at http://pinstall.envicon.com . Pilot Install allows you to install programs directly to your Palm without going through the whole hotsync process.
