As a newcomer to this forum, the usual apologies if these Qs have been aired before!

It would be simple for me if I could find a way to convert BASIC programmes to OPL - is there such a programme?

Again, I could save a lot of time if I could transfer an Excel spreadsheet to my Psion 5MX.

Any pointers appreciated.

As far as I'm aware, there's nothing that will automatically convert a BASIC program into OPL. I'm not a programmer, but I understand the languages are quite similar, so perhaps it won't be too onerous.

There's some useful OPL information on Steve Litchfield's excellent site:

http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/progindex.htm

As for spreadsheets, my Excel files have always transferred most successfully to my Psions via PsiWin.

Most single sheet woorkbooks convert well, though some formatting will be lost and some formula might work slightly differently (i.e. herticle and horizontal lookup doesnot work properly).

On converting Basic to OPL there is no way to do this (except manually). However, you can run DOS compatible basic on the Psion! I have run GWBasic and QBasic! What you need is the XTM emulator (It takes a bit of time to set up as you will need DOS and have to create a disk image to copy to your Psion, this acts as the DOS boot disk and will be 1.4 meg in size!)

For information and download go to www.nb-info.co.uk.

Thanks Beaky - unfortunately the link appears dead.

Running a DOS basic would do fine if I can ever set it up!

As a simpleton, I could do with help in how to transfer the Excel - PSIWIN put it onto my 5MX but I lost a huge amount of cell information.

You're not a simpleton - I guess it's my spreadsheets that are simple!! ;) They are indeed single sheet ones, and they always seem to have transferred without problem.

I think we need some input here from anyone used to handling more complicated sets of data.

I have transferred multi-sheet Excel docs to my Psion and what seems to happen is that all the Excel sheets get stuck onto a single sheet on the Psion, one below the other. At first I thought I'd lost all the data on the other sheets but then I scrolled down and there it was.

Some of the formatting was lost but I'm afraid my spreadsheets are pretty simple too so I'm not sure how multi-sheet formulae would translate

Cheers

nConvert from www.neuon.com works pretty well at converting Excel worksheets and workbooks. I use it and have overall been pleased. It can split multiple worksheet Excel workbooks into separate Psion Sheet files. I have had no problem with formula conversion - only slight formatting issues from time to time.

Hope this helps.
