New Palm OS compatibility with older Palm units?

I have a friend at work who just got a Tungsten. He was using a Palm IIIxe. He told me that when he installed the new software it overwrote his old software but would not sync any of his information. Is there a way for him to get the information from his IIIxe over to the Tungsten? I figured the Palm software would be backwards compatable but he said it wouldn't work. He also wanted to continue to use both units on the same system but it apparently wouldn't work that way. Will the new Palm software not work for the IIIxe? He even tried installing the new software on a different Hard Drive but it still wouldn't work. If anyone has experienced this and can give him some tips it would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't had a problem syncing the Tungsten T, m515, and m130 to the same PC.

I have had a problem when syncing both a serial and usb handheld. Check the hotsync custom settings and make sure both "Local Serial" and "Local USB" are checked, that usually solved it for me.

Ok I'll ask him about that. I think the main problem he was having was that the data (datebook, address book, ect) from the IIIxe did not show up on the Tungsten when he syncronized.

When first syncing a new handheld you are asked to create a new user or select a current user. If your friend created a second user name then the information from the IIIxe won't sync to the TT. They can go into the palm files (usually C:/palm) open the files for the first user (usually a distortion of the hotsync ID), copy the .dat files from the date, etc and paste into the new user files. The easiest thing to do would be to do a hard reset on the TT and start over. (hard reset =use the end of the stylus to push the reset while holding down the power button, release the power button when the palm logo shows on the screen, answer yes to erase all date). Then sync the TT and select the user name for the IIIxe, everything SHOULD sync. If they still want to use the IIIxe they can hard reset that one and give it another user name.
