If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you need to use PsiWin version 2.3.3 as earlier versions won't work. Unfortunately, uninstalling a previous version still leaves bits behind that interfere with the installation of PsiWin 2.3.3. Use the attached registry cleaner file after you have uninstalled a previous version of PsiWin but before you install PsiWin 2.3.3.

You can obtain PsiWin 2.3.3 at http://www.psionplace.com/software/series5/PsiWin-1999-04-28-psion-series5.html . It is about a 25 mb download so it helps to either have a broadband connection or something else to do while you're waiting for it to download on dialup.:)

Good idea to post this as a "sticky" Jim - we should have done it long ago! ;)

Julie,

Indeed, but the credit goes to John for the idea, not me. I don't know why we didn't think of this earlier either. :)

Yes, the registry cleaner is for your PC and Psiwin 2.3.3. It is not specific for any EPOC model of handheld.

I've been running PsiWin 2.3.3 for some time, however, since I upgraded to Office 2003, a few of the functions seem to have gone very silly.
1) When using the sync. function, I no longer get a report of changes, simply a dialogue box with an error message to say it can't generate a report for each change (ususally three or four in some cases)
2) The back up process is generating silly times (currently it is 61035 minutes) although it is nearly finished.
I considered re-installing it and using the reg cleaner before doing so, but I don't want to create too many problems for myself if I do.
Anyone with any ideas?

Conkers, is the long backup time because you are letting PsiWin backup both your C and D drives? My D drive would take ages so I back it up using a card reader.

I back up the D Drive occasionally, but I've re-installed PsiWin after un-installing it, and running the Reg Cleaner.
It appears to be running okay. However, I'll know whe I add/alter some of the entries in my diary.
Thanks anyway

If you mean the link in the first post, that's probably because it's old. Anyway, if you want to download PsiWin 2.3.3 then click the following link, http://www.mypsionsupport.com/mypsion/downloads.asp?Guest=English&product=Series+3c&category=&os=&language=English&Submit=Search&Keywords=

Hallo everyone,
I have just joined this list as I was looking for help with installing PsiWin. I have had a 5mx for several years and am extremely pleased with it. Recently I have not had occasion to use it and in the meantime had purchased a new computer running XP, SP2 (I was on Win2000 before). I did install PsiWin version 2.3.0 on the new computer along with my other programmes, but when trying to connect my 5mx recently, it wasn't recognised.
I have tried to uninstall PsiWin with the usual problems, downloaded the registry cleaner file you mention, but when I right-click on it there is no option to Install there, only to Open, Browse, and the other usual options. I did reboot but the icon is still present on my desktop so it obviously hasn't installed.
Can you please help?

Just double-click on the .inf file and it'll do its thing.

Do not use PsiWin 2.3.0! Use version 2.3.3

Thanks, Keith, for your response.
I have double-clicked on the .inf file as suggested, the file opened with all its data. I then rebooted leaving the file open, but the icon is still present.
Should I risk downloading 2.3.3 with it still there?

I'm not sure just where you are in the "remove PsiWin" stage. You should first use the Add/Remove process to remove whatever PsiWin you have. Then run the Reg Cleaner. That shold remove all the left-over stuff, such as the Psion desktop icon. Then install PsiWin 2.3.3.

Keith
P.S. I'm no expert on this so hope some watchers will also respond.

Hallo Keith,
I have deleted the main files using Control Panel-Add or Remove Programmes, and there is nothing showing there now, just the icon on the Desktop.

Now run Reg Cleaner. That should remove the Psion desktop icon. If it does that, then install PsiWin 2.3.3.

I have found installing and uninstalling PsiWin to be one of those "if at first you don't succed. the try, try, try again" tasks. The last time it took me 4 or 5 attempts before it worked smoothly, so don't give up.

I had already used Add/Remove Programmes to uninstall PsiWin Version 2.0, but had been left with the usual bits and pieces including the icon.
After I had downloaded the Reg Cleaner and right-clicked on it numerous times without seeing the Install option, I tried one more time and, lo and behold, it was there! Couldn't believe my eyes. Anyway I clicked on that and just before the screen switched off, I saw the icon disappear.
So I was able to download Version 2.3.3 and to reconnect my 5mx.
Thank you so much for all your help.

Dear Jim

I saw your postings re the Psion 5 and thought you could advise.
I have had several Psions in the past and never been able to sync to my PC.
My current Revo is broken and need to replace it with another tiny desktop mainly to reference phone numbers. I was thinking either of a brand new XDA exec (bought with a phone contract) or a Psion 5. I dont like the former because of the size of the keys and am nervous about the 5:
1. Backing up to/from Outlook. Is this easily doable?
2. B/W screen too faint. Is the backlight useful in daylight?

regards, Sam

Hi!
I have just re-found my Psion 3a. It's still in great nick and still shows that it has superb functionality. I have purchased a Serial to USB connector and downloaded Psiwin2.3.3 (English). I have checked the Regedit 36dd registry mark, uninstalled the Psiwin 2.3.3, run the regedit cleaner (.inf) file, re-installed the Psiwin 2.3.3 and ..... still no connectivity. I have installed Psiwin 1.1 (doesn't it still good?) and although the message changes from "Connecting to Psion" to "Establishing Link" I still get problems. I have changed the baud rate, gone to Control Panel and rechecked the Device Manager settings. I have successfully linked to the Computer through HyperTerminal and Comms on the Psion - well I can print some letters on the PC screen by typing on the Psion.
Can anyone suggest any thing else I can try? My head is sore!
Cheers

The sequence is everything.
- Make sure that PsiWin is completely removed
- Install the Serial to USB converter
- Install PsiWin
- Assign a com port, ideally 1-4

After that I too am at the head scratching phase.

I'll do as you say and try again - it must be worth it in the end!

I tried but to no avail; HOWEVER, I did use my son's computer (whilst he was out). It has a serial connector. The Psiwin 1.1 worked first time and I have uploaded and backed up the Psion without a problem. It all seems to point towards the Prolific USB to Servial connector... What a waste of money...
Thnaks for your help however.

If you seach the forum you will find many posts on Serial/USB converters that don't work. The converter sold by www.clove.co.uk works OK.

"The USB converter allows you to use a standard PsiWin or Palm cable with your Mac or PC USB port."

I think the problem with some converters is that one or more serial pins that PsiWin requires are not wired up through to the USB. Sorry, I should have questioned the make of converter first.
