Getting serial output from the car cradle

Now with NMEA output available, there is interest in having serial output from the car cradle. Not easy to solder on these UC connectors, I know. It's tight down there, especially with the printed circuit boad. Any good ideas up?

Note to those taking apart their auto cradles, watch out for the springs :D

Running the serial cable out the back seems the easiest way to me at first glance. Cutting a slot in the back of the cradle wouldn't compromise anything structually with it.
