And I have motorola wap mobile phone - which I use as a modem sometimes - will I be able this method of sending/ receiving emails from my Psion 7 in Oz??Probably, assuming there is a roaming agreement between the two countries, but there are a lot of issues here - it's the sort of thing that can take a good bit of forward planning. I wish I knew what country you are currently in, by the way. Obviously bear in mind that you could be in for expensive international call charges if you intend to connect to your regular ISP for handling mail, dependent upon your current location.
Also, some people find that they are able to connect to their ISP OK from a foreign country and receive mail, but not send out. Put simply, this is a limitation imposed by some ISPs and there is not really an easy workaround.
A good (and probably cheaper) option may be to set up a webmail account which permits access to POP3 mailboxes, then set up a temporary ISP account in Australia. I'm sure somebody out there could advise you on that. Depending on your cellphone, you might be able to get a SIM card there giving you cheaper local access.
This is in danger of becoming a long reply, because there are just so many factors. I daren't even mention GPRS, which was the system I found best for me on a couple of recent trips into Europe.
A few assumptions made in above reply, by the way, as I didn't really have enough information to work on. Perhaps if you post again with a bit more info we can advise you further.
Julie
thanks a million for your in-depth reply.
I live in UK. I use Tiscali and TelecomPlus and have an email address with both. If all else fails,I maybe could go to the Tiscali Home page and access my emails that way. Maybe!
The thing is what I would prefer to do is just to take myPsion 7 with me, and not lug along my extremely heavy laptop. I do not have great success on the web with the Psion 7 - although it is utterly brilliant for everything else I want to do. And yes, I relly must re-install Opera - which I lost some time ago when I had to do 're-set'
Thanks again - any further info re modem etc will be grateflly received!

Firstly, yes, you really MUST install Opera - download the latest version for Symbian from:
http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?platform=symbian&session=
I strongly recommend that you install Opera to a CF card in Drive D - it's a memory-hungry application, so doing this leaves you more operating space on Drive C. A lot of browser crashes are simply down to running out of memory.
Some websites require your browser to be Java-enabled, so I suggest you install that too, also on D. If you don't already have the file for that I can send it to you.
I suggest you get the above sorted first, then see if you can access your Tiscali mail from the web - that would be a step in the right direction, I think?
You certainly shouldn't need to take that laptop with you! I spent quite some time in Spain earlier this year, and my netBook and cellphone provided everything I needed, keeping me fully in touch without ever needing the Internet café. ;)
Let me know how you get on.

<<<Some websites require your browser to be Java-enabled, so I suggest you install that too, also on D.>>> I use a netbook with the latest OS which comes with Opera, do I need a special Java add on thingy also? If so I would love it if you could send it to me or point me in the right direction. I was not aware of an extra bit needed, and from the limited surfing I do with the netbook have not encountered problems.

If you want to test it for yourself to be sure, try logging in to EpocChat from your netBook (URL in my sig below) - we use a Java applet for our chatroom there. You don't have to wait for the appointed time on Sunday - the chatroom is open 24/7, so you can test it any time. You might find you're talking to yourself though, lol!

Thanks for the explanation Julie. I was not aware I was on the series 7 forum there (or that there OS differed in that respect. Always good to learn unexpectedly)
<<<You might find you're talking to yourself though>>> Wouldn't be for the first time.

July, and Julie,
I can't see any reason why not - might just require a different adapter - can anyone from Australia comment on this please?
To plug into the Australian telephone system requires an adapter from UK adapters (if you continue to New Zealand you won't though).
Otherwise I don't see any problems apart from the costs of the phone calls to your ISP.
hope this helps,
Fred

Thanks, Fred, that sounds like another piece of the jigsaw puzzle in place for July. I shall try to remember that little bit of info for future reference.

I tell you, this forum is a great place to find! Thanks for all the help - will go and buy and OZ adapter asap!
This is just general after going through all the above one I have religated my infra red modem to e mail only no mater what settings it was on ( and I found plenty of sugested settings) it would constantly disconect, a freind and I came to the conclusion the infra red transfer did not like the stop start of browsing. As my Psion 7 worked ok on the web with the old travel modem and I have no trouble with my gold card only the infra red travel modem. Also if you go on the web and look for dial up or free isp conections in the country you are going (this does not mean you do not pay but only pay local call rates when connected) you could posible do as I did when I went to Sweden and set up a dial up ISP conection before you get there (I actualy still use mine via the internet). As long as you have a pop3 or mapi type email account you can access your emails from anywhere in the world you can connect. You go to http://www.mail2web.com and then go to advanced log in and if you have your service provider mail log in details "pop3.mail.co.uk" your account name or user name and pasword you get your mail you can send mail as well but check the return address first before you send as it atempts to guess your email address. It is possible to alter this though.

FWIW about 2 years ago I got an IR modem and all the descriced troubles, after much hassle and chasing psion admitted that the earlier models shipped with a defective chip (can't remember what it was) and when I gave them the serial number they confirmed it had one of those - hitchi or tochiba or such like - and asked me to return it to them and they sent me a new one which works fine. I never use it now and will be selling it with a load of other stuff like PCMIA adapters for 5mx etc. soon as it isgathering dust. I now use just a Gold card or a mobile phone so no need for it. Not sure there ismuch you can do about it now as psion are defunct. if you have a look through the psion gooogle archive http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en&group=comp.sys.psion you should find reference to this chip defect in early models.
Sorry I can not give better news.

July i dont actually have a series 7 (yet!!!) but have been exploring the posibility of internet access if I go to New Zealand and Oz next year. Check out this site that offers a low cost dial up that is debited from you credit card and then all you need is someone to let you 'borrow' there phone line at no cost to them.
