I've got a Palm IIIxe - I have two questions:

1) One day it just died. It's not the batteries, I changed them twice. It boots up OK, then I get that Screen of Death with the Palm logo and it freezes. I've tried resetting it many times - it works for a few seconds then freezes AGAIN. Can someone fix it for a reasonable price? Anyone in Texas, preferable Austin, TX?

If no one can fix it, my main goal is:

2) Can I run Linux on it? And can I use it wireless?? I'd like to use it for 'research' purposes on 802.11 stuff...you know...

Any info would be appreciated - THANKS!

oh and, I know 'google's your friend' I can't find any info on the linux ? - thanks!

Perhaps one of the buttons is stuck ON. Press each button a few times then put in the batteries. If that doesn't work then the problem may be something corrupted in the flash ROM.

Good luck.

I think you can reset the FlashROM by holding down the MEMO pad button at the same time as the reset pin on the back- then it will ask if you want to redo the flash of something, but I'm not sure so FIND SOME MORE DETAILS ON IT BEFORE YOU DO.
There is a project to put linux on palm but don't hold out much hope. As for wireless on a IIIxe the closest you'll get is using your infrared port with a mobile.:(

This "sled" from Parachute Technologies will fit your IIIxe. I haven't used it, and the fact that drivers are "in development" for the PCMCIA cards it supports isn't encouraging.

Now if this would permit simultaneous access to a keyboard instead of just either-or, I'd pick this up.

Perhaps their sales staff has more info on what drivers are available. You'd think they'd put it on the web site or something.

The link is here (http://www.parachutetech.com/products.htm#Para_iii).
