Here is my major problem

I bought a hp jornada 680 in sept 1999. it has worked exceedingly well with not one problem till today. Suddenly yesterday when I fired it up there was a slight flashy shimmery effect on the screen. This happened 3 times and then stopped. I dismissed it as ‘not important’. Again in the evening when I opened it up there was the same effect but far more pronounced this time. I noticed that if I just gently moved the screen forward and back on it’s spindle the screen would flash and go off and then flash and come back on again. If I did not touch it would stabilize. There was more flashing on the way back than if I closed the screen front-wise.

In the morning today the screen just went completely blank. There is a greyish purplish luminance light somewhere in the background and after a while the screen does flicker back on. I may be wrong but it seems that keeping the jornada 680 on for a while and without touching the screen at all the screen restores back.

This is huge problem for me.

The jornada was a huge investment from my side as I am a small businessman and anyway made a big investment buying the jornada in 1999. Now my whole life, work, contacts are all in here. While I am sure I can backup the jornada it still would be detrimental as I cannot carry that info with me.

Can you please guide me as to what the problem could be.

There is an Hp centre in India but I doubt if there is much knowledge about the jornada 680 here.

Is this a known problem with this product. Is there a simple solution I can do myself to rectify it. Please help quickly.

Even if I can be guided as to what the problem could be I can then get the hp service centre to do something about it. I can ill afford a very large repair bill and it seems to be some kind of a loose connection in the spindle mechanism or something. Please please help. I am really in big trouble.

I can't offer much advice on diagnosing and repairing the issue with your screen, however, there are steps you might want to take to minimize the loss of data and information if the machine is done.

If the problem is limited to the display, it may still be possible to establish a connection to your desktop and back up all the data. I would strongly recommending doing that before taking any action with the PDA itself that might jeapordize access to still intact data.

(If you do end up sending the device to HP for servicing, it will involve a hard reset, wiping out all memory, anyway. So I would concentrate right away on getting information backed up to another machine.)

I had a similar problem, you may want to tighten the screws under the main battery, this will tighten the screen/lid. After a few months the IR and speakers quit working, probably because of a drop onto the road. I called HP and had the 720 replaced out of warrany for $250. They sent me a new 728 instead. I thought this was a great deal considering the cost of a new 728 is $1000. HP is going to discontinue the Jornada in favor of the Ipaq. So a move now would give you a Jornada.
