Hi, Just joined this forum and this is my first post.
Someone just gave me a Palm Pilot Professional. It came with some floppies and I've loaded the software in my desktop box which runs on Win2000.
I would also like to use/sync the Pilot while using my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop which runs on Win XP. Incidentally, this laptop has no floppy drive.
Can anyone tell me if I can download the software to run on Win XP from the internet ? And if not whether it is at all possible to operate Palm Pilot software on a WinXP platform?
In fact I earlier had a Palm V which I can no longer use because the display konked!
I know the Pilot Prof is <ancient> so you need not tell me about that!! :D
TIA
Cheers

It's no problem to run your old Palm on XP. Just go to http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/palmdt_4.html and download the 4.01 version of the Palm desktop. Don't use the 4.1.4 version. Even though Palm says it will work with older machines, it's really set up to work with USB connections and not a serial connection and will give you problems you don't need.

Hi Jim,
Much appreciate your help and sorry if my reply took longer than it ought to have, but this last week I've had my desktop burn out and had to change it and a heap of pending jobs at work so just couldn't get time earlier to try out and then report the results.
I dld the 4.1.0, but then I got into a spot of trouble.
You see 4.1.0 would have been fine if only my laptop had a Serial Port to which I could connect my Pilot. Unfortunately it doesn't. So I had to go looking for a Serial to USB connector. I got myself the connector and loaded the driver. I also dld the 4.1.4 from the Palm website as the website recommends 4.1.4 for WinXP with USB connection.
I thought my problems would be over...:o alas !!
You see I have three USB ports in my laptop and I am told that regardless of which one you use the laptop will 'recognise'the connection. Well <my> laptop doesn't seem to think so!
When I plug in my cradle/cable/serial plug/USB connector to my laptop I get a small bell sound indicating that the laptop has recognised that a new hardware has been plugged in. But, unfortunately, when I try and HotSync zilch happens and it is as dead as a Dodo
There is NO connection at all. When I checked the HotSync set up I found that the port it is connecting to is COM3 and I cannot change it. I then tried another (of the 3) USB ports, but still nothing happens.
Incidentally, I have Win XP on my new desktop which has a Serial Port and have 4.1.4 dld on it and it Hotsyncs perfectly with the Palm Pilot.
May I trouble you for any other ideas you might have, because I really do need to use the Palm with my laptop also.
Thanks a million for your time
Cheers,

Hi Jim,
I just wrote out a long msg and when I checked the length of the msg it just disappeared!!
So now I have to do it again - this time very briefly:
* Got my hotsync to work finally by changing the Driver.
* No data would transfer from the HH to the LT inspite of the Setup settings being correct
* changed Ver from 4.1.4 to 4.0.1
Now when I try to open the Palm program, I get a msg-
"Error: Failed to open Date book database"
and then the program just closes down!!
Any suggestions would be welcome..
TIA
