but not in a funny way, after soft-resetting my IIIc it suddenly decided not to boot but to give my a constantly flashing screen, unless i keep one of my buttons pressed down it keeps flashing. i already tried all kinds of soft resets and can only get it into debug mode and data erase mode (hard-reset) . though i am sure i can get it working again, i do wonder why it does this and how to solve it (that is without hard-resetting)?

I don't think there is any way around a Hard Reset :(

This happened once to my Visor Deluxe. It never happened again after a Hard Reset.

I realize this is an old post but I seem to be having the same problem,
I have done a hard rest 3 times (2 in the last 24 hrs) the screen just flashes and if I hold the power button it asks to erase all data, I have done this over and over, and for the short period it is working it is very slow and I get fatal errors, The last one was after I erased everything and only have the palm OS on the system.

My questions are:

What is the life expectancy of the rechargeable battery in the 3C
could this be a part of the problem
I have to work to get a full charge and I get battery warnings when the indicator says 1/2 full

Is this a common problem?

How do I go about fixing this thing? (buying a new one is not an option)

Please help

Shane

The battery should last about 2 years. The cradle should produce enough juice to get it running ok for at least a few minutes after a long recharge.

So it doesn't run right even after a Hard Reset?

No and now I have to push the reset to even get it to turn on.
any ideas?

it is of clearly enough not in the software on your RAM, so you might try to redo your OS: get a 3.5 or 4.1 ROM and a flashtool. in this stage it really can't do much harm anymore, can it? besides if you had any protection software or anything else installed that bugged itself into the flash it remains there even after a hard reset. if you can get it running there is a tool in the jack-app series capable of removing such software.
As for battery life when used properly 2 years is an absolute minimum

Here's where you can get the OS3.5 upgrade:
http://www.palm.com/support/35upgrade/palmvx_upgrade.html

Even though it says it's only for Palm Vx, the upgrade PDF says it works for all Palm OS3.0 and above handhelds:
http://www.palm.com/support/35upgrade/downloads/OSUpgrade.pdf

And if you want to revert back, or just get the same OS that was in your IIIc before:
http://www.palm.com/support/35upgrade/revert-engl.html

if it doesn't work i have an actual IIIc 3.5 ROM, get it here (http://geocities.com/startux05/palmdev/roms/romiiic.zip), if it does not do what it's supposed to or you need any other OS PM me and i'll see what i can fix you up with.

If you have a palm with flash memory i would once again suggest reflashing the entire OS

I was deleting this program called Formula when my palm hanged. I did the 'soft reset' and the next thing I knew, the symptoms you guys were having is the same as this one. The only difference is that I'm using Palm OS 4.1.1.

Can anybody help me restore it. I have my data backed-up but my important SMSes were not backed up. They are important as they contain important messages. Therefore I cannot afford to 'hard reset' it. Please somebody help me out.
Thank you.

First try a Warm Reset to get somewhat operational:
http://www.palmone.com/us/support/helpnotes/hardware/resets.html

Then you could try deleting apps one by one. Soft Reset to check if you got the right one. Before you HotSync again, move apps in the Backup directory to a new directory e.g. Backup2.

SMS's should be backed up on the PC somewhere. If you can find the file, you can copy it then Hard Reset with no worries.

Are the apps backed up? I don't recall reading any logs about apps being backed up other than the usual like To-Dos, Memos and stuff like that. If so, where can the back-up files be found? I hope I can find the backed up smses if they really are backed-up so that I can hard-reset it..

it's so fustrating.. by the way, is the problem called reset loop or 'boot looping'?

By the way, what IS the Page Up button anyway?
I have not a clue to what it is....

JohnKes

On the PC, look for a folder named Backup. It should be under a folder with your HotSync name (or abbreviation thereof). There should be backups of all of your added apps. You can also look around for a file labeled "mail" or "SMS".

Page Up on a T|W is the top of the D-pad. Just tip it upwards when you push the reset button.

yes i've checked the backup and yeah the apps were all backed-up. unfortunately no sms folders or anything similar.. looks like my messages are gone for good.

please someone in this 2 days will anyone help me? if onli this problem can be solved without having to use hard-reset...

I agree. This could be as simple as a program malfunction. I find that some programs just don't want to work well on some PDA's. And can cause the Palm to freeze up & need to have a soft reset.

However with the Splash Screen just flashing on & off it sounds like an OS or harware issue.

I would suggest flashing the OS. If this doesn't help then you've got a problem with your motherboard. Replacing this should fix the problem.

After nearly 17 months I got a reset loop on my M515 and not even a hard reset is getting me out of it. From the suggestions in this thread it sounds like re-installing my OS might work, but how do I do that if I can't get out of the reset loop.
A possible loophole ;-) might be the scoll down button as it seems that when I press this the screen goes blank - a possible debugging screen but I have no idea what to do from here.

Any ideas ?

Here is where you can get OS4.1 with installer:
http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/palmos41.html
I'm not sure if it will allow you to install onto an m515.

You can also try opening the unit up and pulling the battery connector off for 30 seconds. After you plug it back in, it might go back to normal. Instructions for opening up:

Thanks John,

Unfortunately I'm running on Windows XP:mad: . I'm going to remove the battery in the morning as per the instructions you've referred to and then take it from there. If unsuccessful I'll try a Windows 2000 PC I have access to.

 I'm getting nowhere with this. All forms of button resets have been attempted. Have now opened the M515 and disconnected the battery - actually a very simple and pleasant task. The device is actually very nicely assembled and makes for easy repairs (or module replacement at any rate).

But the M515 is still in a reset loop that I cannot get out of. Is there someway I can get access to the OS4.1 as is version (not the upgrade) ?

I'll contact Palm as well.:o

I'm not sure where to find the m515 ROM or programs for flashing it. You might have to scope around Google. Look out for warez sites. I don't like those because some do strange things to your browser.

you might want to try doing a flash-reset (press memo-button while resetting).
If even that doesn't work, you'll indeed need to place a new ROM onto your palm.

Unfortunately i do not have a 515 ROM but here (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=70635) is somebody who clames he does. If you have a ROM and can get your palm into debug mode you should be able to reflash the ROM onto you palm using either the 515 or the 505 upgrade utility (the 505 should be available for USB).

If you cannot get the 515 ROM onto your palm you might want to try putting a 505 ROM into it first, then putting a 515 ROM onto it.

If you do get the 505 ROM onto your palm but then cannot get the 515 ROM onto it you might want to try contacting brayder (http://www.brayder.com) (you might even consider doing it anyway), they should be able to put you up with a utility (deviceid.prc) and a 515 ROM that you can then place onto your palm.

succes
...you'll probably need it ;)

little bit of an update:

found ye a Palm m515 OS 4.1 ROM. :D
it's not mine and thus i have not tested it yet so you might want to use an emulator first as to test it.

Since however the don't let me upload it (unless cut into 16 parts  ) PM me and i'll mail it

succes ;)
