having a minor crisis as I just performed a netbook hard reset to test something for a forum reply about OS.IMG on CF cards. Installing the new OS all went well, But on the copying of my backup from a cf I am getting error messages apparcserver thread E32user-cbase, reason No: 21 and it quits before restoring it all. I have deleted the comsdb.dat File from the backup and previous opera folder. I am also getting the old problem of the opera silkscreen button has stopped working since the restore of backup and has returned to the preevious setting before I had the new OS on the left silk screen button allocated, it still loads fine with the latest opera of the new OS.
Also I have re-entered my modem and internet detail but when I try to log in I get the message check modem settings and internet control panel are set up. Also the freeware "The Dialer" is no longer accessible and when i reinstalled it it still does not work with error message "Not found". I might have to hard reset again and install apps one at a time and not just restore the whole backup including systems folder all at once, unless anyone out there can help, Please
Bother - to put it politly
Its alright - you don't need to hard reset!
This error relates to having applications stored on CF card. I used to habitually get the errors you mention when switching between my 'applications' CF card and my 'backup' CF card.
There are two ways to fix it. A soft reset will do it, but if you want a more permanent solution (prevent both the 'AppArcserver thread E32user-cbase, reason No: 21' and 'Not Found' messages), you simply need to copy the contents of the D:\System\Recogs folder into the equivalent place on C.
These files have something to do with helping EPOC identify the location of the program that handles a given file type; why putting them all on C helps I do not know, but it works...

Yan arrives to the rescue just to late. Impatients got me and I began the long way and now manually re-entered all modem/ internet and mail setting (finnally got round to resolving the problem of using the old commsdb.dat file which necessiteated always using TheDialer) also resolved the old opera problem of it turning up on the left silk screen buttons and the top right one not working, even though I uninstalled the old version of Opera before backing up.
All in all inspite of the loss of quite a few hours and a bit of a short temper, a profitable exercise. A sort of Feng Shui space clearing of my netbook and now having cleared and moved and manually reinstalled and re-registered Apps i have an extra 20MB of internal memory - yes shocking, could have saved some money and not needed the DIMM upgrade I brought, though its nice knowwing its there :-)
WOW so your explanation is amazing and most valuable and I will print it and store it and file it for the next time and will be grateful as ever. Hope it helps others from going through a whole suffering. (Now you mention it I do remember once reading something about the recogs file and switching CFs but in my distress as usual all sense departed other than posting for help here, it all seemed brighter in the morning).

Just out of interest
"you simply need to copy the contents of the D:\System\Recogs folder into the equivalent place on C"
Where is the appropriate place on C?

Is there any reason why I don't have this as a folder showing in my C:/system/ folder? I have this on my 5mx but not on the new Netbook. Should I create a folder called this and transfer the contents of D's system/recogs?
Thanks,
Grant
its no big deal that the folder is not there yet. It gets created by the first program you install that uses a 'recog' file. Thus it will be perfectly safe to create it and copy all the files across from the CF. Note this is only necessary if you use that CF card in the netBook and run applications off it.

I do - thanks Yan. I was getting an error message if I was in C drive but removed the CF card
