I've been getting used to my new 3835 this weekend and I'm generally very happy. I think, though, that the browser is holding me back from getting some of the content I'm used to getting off of the web. My company portal runs on Plumtree. I can get to my homepage, but I can't open or run anything. Does IE for Pocket PC support frames, and JAVA? I had been using Opera on my Psion, and it worked great on this site, but I don't see an Opera product for Pocket PC.
Should Pocket IE do it, or should I be looking for a 3rd party browser? If the latter, any recommendations?
Also, how do I save sites to favorites? I loaded favorites on my PC and synced it to my IPAQ, but is there a way to do it directly on the IPAQ?
Thanks,
Jeff

Pocket IE supports frames, some javascript, but not java.
Alternative browser, Thunderhawk:

To save webpages directly with pocketIE, MultiIE:

It looks like AnswerDude has covered the browser questions. As for adding to your favorites there is an icon at the bottom of the IE that is a folder. Clicking this takes you to your favorites, the irst one is a list of your favorites and the second tab (Add/Delete) is for adding pages.

Thanks for the guidance. I'm still having trouble openning e-mails on my portal. When I open them on my desktop, the e-mail opens as a new window on top of the portal main page. I close the window to close the e-mail and return to the portal main page. When I click on them on the IPAQ, nothing seems to happen. I probably used the term "frames" incorrectly. Am I doing something wrong, or is the e-mail openning somewhere and I just don't see it.
Otherwise, I'm loving the IPAQ
Thanks again!

With the IE on the PocketPC it can only open one page at a time. So when a page tries to spawn a new page without closing the first one it doesn't do anything. This is where the MultiIE comes in that was suggested above. MultiIE allows for multiple IE Windows. I myself installed the trial version last night and it works quite well. I would highly recomend trying it to see if is what you're looking for.

If you dont want to get a new web browser and just want to use Pocket I.E. you can always hack it to make it seem like you are using I.E. 5 or 6 on a windows 2000 system. Then you can go look at every page like you were on a your own comp. The only draw back that the web pages wont fit on the screen so ya.

I loaded the trial version of Multi IE last night and was not able to launch my e-mails. The install went fine and the Multi IE icon appears at the bottom of the screen. I tap and hold the e-mail item hypertext and then select "Open in New Window" - the system thinks for a few seconds and then dumps me on my Start page. The original window is still open, but no new window is listed. I can only conclude that Pocket IE can't run the Java script that opens these e-mails.
Any other suggestions before I give up and wait for an upgrade from HP?
Deadmaniac what you said sounds interesting.
How do you hack and change the preferences and won't that damage the program/system in any way?
I alsto tried MultiIE and doesn't work... so I need a better browser

For your companies Web Mail are we talking JavaScript or a Java Applet?

I'm not sure that I know how to answer that. Is there a way I can query the site/hypertext?

I've found if you view the source code it should give what type of scripting lang. it's using a the tope of the page. You could always ask one of the Sys Admins, if they answer questions like that.

It says "Javascript open..." and then a long string of numbers. So I guess it's script and not an applet.

Just a question before we go any further, does your company support POP3 or IMAP so you could use Pocket Outlook to check your mail?

I am able to sync my e-mail when I'm in the office. I'd like to be able to get to it via my portal when I'm travelling.
Thanks for trying to help me with this. I appreciate it.
Jeff
Try CrEme VM from NSICom (www.nsicom.com). It's a very good java vm.

Sorry for bringing up such an old post, but I'm having exactly the same problem this guy was having.
I can't use MultiIE because it freezes up the h4150 (my device), there is a warning of this on the website but I obviously didn't listen and installed it.... Then I needed to do a hard reset (lucky I did a backup before installing it).
Thunderhawk browser would not install on my h4150 because it says my device is not supported yet, plus, I wasn't too keen on paying the $50 US a year (or $6 US a month) subscription fee.
I didn't like the reg tweak idea, and nsicom CrEme didn't do anything.
I will wait for an updated version of MultiIE, but I was just wondering if there had been any solutions to this issue in the past year? Thanks for any info.

Just as a side issue, PocketPlus is a great little utility that also gives you the ability to open multiple IE windows as well as a few other really useful bits

ThunderHawk does work well, BUT!!, it also uses your client to go through servers they control to access the internet, using a session that closes after you exit. If you are access secure sites or are passing credit card info, it is possible for someone who administrates those systems to see your data.
I found a better self contained browser called Netfront, and use it on my Ipaq 5550. I give it a high recommendation. The PIE that ships now is complete crap.
Get it here------>

Yeah, I also found NetFront v3.0, and aside from a couple of problems I'm having, it is excellent.
My problems are specific to a particular site I'm trying to load. It has about five frames, but usually only one frame divider loads, and occasionally one full frame will load. The strange thing is, this only happens with the full version. The demo version loads the page beautifully! I've contacted their tech support, but in the meantime does anyone have any suggestions?
I can't give you the site address to test, because it is a online-access work email site.

I tried the latesat (compatible) version of MultiIE on my 4155 and found that it caused a delay whenever I powered up the 4155. It didn't matter whether IE was running or not. THe delay was very noticable - with the screen remaining blank for almost a second after pushing the power button.
I deleted the MultiIE program and the unit once again powers on instantly.
Curious!

I got a reply from NetFront customer support.
They said that NetFront v3.0 does not officially support Windows Mobile 2003. However, it still appears to me to function quite well.
They told me to contact Handango if I wanted to cancel, which I won't do but at least they gave me the option.
IMPORTANT: They said a new version that supports WM2003 will be released this month, so anyone wanting to buy it should wait a little while. They said anyone who purchased NetFront v3.0 will get a discount.

Have just tried ThunderHawk - works a treat - great tip.
One wee Q..whilst at desktop pc on in-house lan site - IE and T/Hawk browsing is fine with setting in ActiveSync set to allow pass-through browsing (using desktop pc/cradle to supply net connection). However I wish to view sites on local Intranet but these are not accessible. Is this an interface setting, have tried putting local DNS address into iPaq I/F menus but no luck - where do I start ....? is this an iPaq or desktop pc setup..?
