AD, this may be for you in particular as I followed your links!;)

I downloaded betaplayer and have installed it on my hx4700. I also downloaded smartripper, flaskmpeg and pocketdivxencoder for use on my pc. Using the instructions I found, I loaded a dvd and ripped it to my hdd. I then tried to use the next sequence of instructions and that was to convert the output .vob files from smartripper with flaskmpeg. Unfortunately, this gives an error message. Screenshot attached. Could someone tell me what I/it may be doing wrong?

The instructions I have are to rip the dvd with smartripper. Then feed the .vob files with flaskmpeg and to convert those into a "640x480 slow-high-quality-mpeg2, 29.97fps". And then use pocketdivxencoder to convert the mpeg2 into divx format. And finally, to copy the divx file onto the hx4700. I believe this is necessary in order to view dvds on my hx4700 in 640x480?

Comments/help appreciated.

Feed vob file directly into PDE. You don't need flaskmpeg.

AD, if I pump the files direct into PDE does that give me the 640x480 which the author's instructions give the impression that only FlaskMpeg will give?

Yes, under Advanced options --Select Target Device below as VGA (4th one from the right).

Does it work? Another free tool reported to work well is FairUse Wizard
http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/index.html
And for anyone who already have Nero, Recode which is part of its package also works very well;

AD, I ripped a dvd with smartripper and tried to feed it into pde but it refused to convert it and wrote some weird errors to the log file which don't mean much to me. I'll try it later at home. I then took an mpg file and tossed that into pde and it converted to the avi file that I copied onto the SD card (thanks for your advice on how to do that).

I'm not sure what options I need to change in betaplayer but the defaults work really well and the quality is really very good. I only have about 300mb of sd card space available so I'm limited with the quality and the file size I can play with.

I guess the best way out is to buy bigger and more sd cards or invest in some cf cards.

The questions about ripping is in a grey area in term of legality, so I'm not making any comment in open forum. I'll PM you for a suggestiion. Questions about converting is okay, but please limit the question regarding ripping.

OK. I'll wait for you to contact me about it. When I said ripping a dvd, I was really referring to making a backup. Sorry about the confusion I caused!:D
