I had a DVD movie of about 4 GB, ripped it and compressed it to an Mpeg movie of 738 MB.

I used Kinoma Producer (not the trial of course) to make it a movie for my Clie.
When it processed about 1/3 of it the program stopped without any significant warning. Any clue's?

Hi

I have the Kinoma Producer and made some deep testing with it, so here are the results hoping this will help you:

1. MPG : I have encountered many problems depending on the compression used. Many of them were either not wokring or I only got the sound part ! After compressing or ripping, when you open your producer, just check in the preview that you can really play it with sound and image !!! If that does not work then forget it.

2. I am using AVI to record and did not meet any problem using some compression which gave some good final results and worked fine with Kinoma

3. Sound : of course with DVD it may be unimportant but in general, do not try to compress the sound to the max to gain space. You will get a crappy result after conversion ! Just use the plain 44.100 kz stereo and Kinoma will do the rest.

4. DVD: I have a DVD at home and instead of spending a looooooooooot of hours ripping, I simply use a capture software which gives me a nice result on the Clie and which takes only the time that the film lasts !!!!! For a 2 hours movie I get a about 480 MB for an AVI file with good quality in image and stereo sound.

I have been looking all over for programms like that. Where do you get programs to rip DVDs to your computer, and to compress them to be converted by kinoma producer. Also yoman_x what is that program you used to do a capture. How does that work. I hate trying to download trailers because my 28.8 modem is twitchy, and forget about downloading movies. I would much rather use the DVDs i already own to put on my clie

In fact I am not ripping my DVDs, it was taking too much time and as I did not want to rip them in order to get a super quality to put on cd but only as a file for my Clie, ripping was not necessary.

So, what I do is easy. I have a TV card on my pc on which I can also connect an external source (DVD, video). Then I simply use a programme called FLYCAP to capture. I simply play the DVD and record it like that.

You will find the programme at www.download.com and it is a freeware !!!!!!!

Now, I have not tested yet the recording from the DVD player I have on the pc. But I will try and let you know if you are interested.

For info, recording 5 minutes takes 20 MB in hires+ and 15MB in classic view, with stereo sound.

So, I doubt you can put a whole film on just a 128MB memory stick, this should be 30 minutes hires+ or 40 minutes in classic.

Wait for the 512 memory sticks ! I do !

I would gladly like any info on how the dvd player on the computer capturing goes. Thanks for the link, i will try and see what i can do too. As for mem cards, i am trying to hold out for the 1gig card to come out so i can use it for an extra hard drive. But odds are i cant wait and ill end up buying both the 512 and 1 gig lol.

I think you'll both be waiting a long time for a 512 or 1gb stick!!! They haven't even released the 256mb stick yet, and I can't see the 512 coming out for a long while after that. If I were you I'd be happy with 2 or 4 of the 256's when they're released. :P

Yoman, thanks for the Flycap tip. I tried it, seems a nice program.
Unfortunately I have an internal DVD player in my pc.
How to capture a movie then the same way as you do with Flycap, using an external player via the video card?

Yes indeed. I have a TV card (I bought for something like around 60 $) on which I can also connect an external source and then, in flycap, I can use that source for my recording. I am now at work but i'll try to think about sending you details of the flycap configuration because some compression types do not work with Kinoma. What I can tell you already is this:

Sound: use 44.1 khz stereo (don't worry about the size it takes !)
Video:

I use 15 to 18 frames (24 is nice but makes the file much bigger)
I use a screen resolution close to the one used by the Clie. It is useless to decrease it there because you will lose a lot in quality.
In the compression I use I put the slider down to 85% to gain a bit of space. I tried down to 50% but result is obviously crappier and you hardly gain space.
Don't forget that using the Clie CW screen takes much more space. I made a test with a file which was 15 MB classic view and 20MB in full screen CW !!! So on a 128MB stick you could put from about 30 minutes to about 40 to 45 depending of the screen resolution.

Yoman,

Thanks for the quick response.
I think there is a little misunderstanding though.
I like to capture from my internal DVD to AVI. I don't think Flycap can do this for me. How can it be done ?

Indeed, I was only refering to external source. Now, as to internal DVD I am working on it !!! Be sure I will let you know if I ever find a way ! I am also very interested in that option.

Hi,
no problem to encode vob.files from internal dvd-player to kinoma:
Use the freeware dvdx 2.0* (optimized for P IV version included!)
Still no expert with this program (best quality, encoding type, etc., donīt know, not able to get the great quality that sony (?) offeres in some free clips!!)
Send me your settings if you found out the best....

Hi TUI,

i tried to look at the software you suggested but i can't seem to access the download page unless I buy a pass. Is there somewhere else this is for download or maybe just a free dlownload from the site? I would like to try it out but I dont want to have to spend money just to see that I may not like it, Christmas left me a little short on cash this year lol.
