I've had my 5mx for several years and its worked perfectly for the applications I apply. However, just this past week I started experiencing "backlite" failures; at first the backlite would go on & off when I pressed the "function/space bar". Then the world turned dark and the backlite would not respond to the key request. Short of returning my 5mx to the manufacturer, is this a common problem and are there any alternatives for checking out the backlite problem? Appreciate any comments out there-needless to say, the backlite has been very useful in dimmly lighted environments.

Kilgore,

I'm afraid it's time for a trip to the Psion hospital. The backlight panel seems to be good for a couple of years and then fails in the manner you've described. If you're in the UK, POS can handle the repair although I don't know how much it costs.

It is possible that you machine is suffering the classic 'screen cable' failure, but there is one other possibility. Without wishing to teach you to suck eggs, both your main and backup batteries are in good health yes? The backlight will turn itself off (and refuse to turn on) if your batteries are too low.
