I'm curious as to the best way to get the Series 7 working with a mobile.

My machine isn't too happy connecting via Infra-red - not least because I'm often on the move and balancing can be an issue in a train carriage etc.

Is there a cable connection available? I have a Nokia 6210e. Cheers.

I've never looked into connecting Psion to cellphone by cable as I've always found the infrared method quite acceptable. It sounds like you can actually connect OK, it's just keeping things aligned that's the problem?

My solution for this when travelling is to take with me a rigid plastic clipboard, the kind where the clip goes right across the width and forms a "lip". I have a piece of non-slip mat attached under the clip which prevents both Psion and cellphone from sliding around. The lip on the clipboard ensures the phone can't fall off the back. I've used this successfully in a car where the driver was definitely over-enthusiastic about cornering! ;)

Here's a source for the non-slip mat:

It comes on a roll to be cut to size and is pretty inexpensive. You'll no doubt find other uses for the rest of the roll!

Hope that helps

Awesome post July I love it, you should patent it and sell it through Clove maybe, or as shareware ;-) You win the prize for the real psion dedicate (though I did hear of someone who made a really interesting in car stand and also the velcro on the dash and under the psion trick). I will have a go at making one of your clipboards sometime. My way round it is to use the palm tech semi rigid case, which holds the psion well for the lap in car or train or sitting on the slippery table of the train - the lip of the zip hold it well in place and the incar charger still fits, and the cordura nylon of the case is good friction so it is fairly non slip-, then wedge the phone in the corner of the open lid . works pretty well (nothing a bit of velcro on the phone wouldn't enhance) not sure it would handle "over-enthusiastic cornering!" but otherwise I find the IR link really reliable.

Journo,

The only cables you can buy for the 6210 is a cable that will connect a Psion Gold Card Modem to the phone. There is isn't a cable that connects the phone to the serial port of your 7.

So it looks like you will need to try Julie's excellent Blue Peter effort !!!

Regards

Si

Didn't we just KNOW that all that experience with sticky-back plastic would pay dividends in the end??? :D :D :D

nice thread folks ;) Just to be boring however:

Journo, if you can buy a serial 'data cable' for your phone (from Orange presumably), then it would be possible to interface this to your existing Psiwin cable. AFAIK, there is no single cable you can buy that plugs direct from the Psion to the phone though.

Halfords used to sell the non-slip material at about £5 for a piece the size of a mousemat and I did get a couple of bits. I subsequently found rolls of the stuff for a couple of pounds in B & Q Warehouse. I bought a roll and have never used it so I must get a piece cut to the size of the clipboard that I actually balance Psion and phone on (though the car isn't moving at the time!)

I've used it to connect to a Psion with:

* PsiWin serial cable.

* Nokia Data cable for PC.

* Null Modem Adaptor or Null Modem Cable

* Any gender changers needed to get it all connected.
