I'm planning a trip to Portugal in May and would love to use my Ique 3600 overthere.
Right now I only have Cityselect America.

Cityselect 7 Europe is very expensive and seem to not have a lot of informations for Portugal.

I will be traveling a lot over there and need precise informations.

I could use any suggestions,

Thank you very much

As far as I know, ECS V7 has street coverage of the principal citys of Portugal (Lisbon-Port-Coimbra, and so on) also roads and highways as well as the spanish ones. So if you intend to travel over Portugal and the most important towns you must get European City Select Europe V7, indeed at a cost. Otherwise you get to get other non navegable maps as Michelin............................

Thank you,

My wife is native from Portugal, but left when she was young. We will visit her family all around in some small villages...

I was looking at via michelin softwear but it's not compatible with ique.

It look like some people are able to make there own map for the gps use. I'm wondering how this work?? And most likely you can not enter an adress.

But still I think Garmin should sell Cityselect by country not the Complete Europe?

More than 300$ for that product, if you go only to Portugal that's a lot of money!!!

It's kind of a racket no?

Eric: Long ago, Garmin sold maps by means of region but changed its marketing politic, thats is a pity.

But having the whole European Citys and roads, POIs and so on, I would not say it is expensive at all.

:D

Is there any chance that via Michelin would work with our iQues? They have some excellent maps as well as the 3D view per their ads. I am going to Germany and would love to have some mapping and GPS support without buying the entire Garmin Package.

reinbeau, how can unlock codes be unit specific if you can buy CS v6 in store, doesnt it come with the activation codes?

and i formated have my maps on my laptop and desktop and sync betty no prob,
does that mean i just used up the 2 free codes i have for her?

They're tied to a unit, Alan was offering to send his second unlock code, the first was used on his unit; the software hadn't been paid for by the person asking. Maybe I'm inaccurate about tying to units, but I do know what was proposed is illegal and not to be discussed here.

Just thinking!
My last trip to Europe took me through Wales, England, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. That would be a lot of individual CDs if each country was seperate![as they were to some extent three years ago]

It has just cost me $117 to get the 'unlock code' to update v6 to v7 for the whole of Europe. How much would it have cost to 'unlock' the individual countries?

Are the US versions available by individual States?

I think the difference between the US maps and the European maps is that the GPS data is free over here, we pay for it with our tax dollars, so it isn't as expensive to develop the maps. You EU types ought to work on this! :D

Free geodata certainly would be nice for us here. I can see some point in this if we talk about data gathered by governmental agencies such as municipalities. We pay high taxes, and such data may then also be available for free to the tax payers.

But how about geodata gathered by private companies like Navteq? If the iQue's cartography (gathered by Navteq) is free in the US, how can Navteq survive then (assuming their only activity is putting geodata in the market)?

Or are we non US citizens paying Navteq's survival? :)

OK we have (Europe) official geodata, roads, haighways, citys and so on. That geodata we can get though municipalities, regional governments, etc. etc.

But there are other interesting data which is covered by private companies as petrol station, hotels, museums, restaurants, phone numbers, adresses, an so on.

We get to pay for that kind of information collected by Navtech and similar companies and brought to us by Mapsource (Garmin).

Regarding the unlock code for the maps. Anne is right when she said the unlock code is "unit especific". Indeed they are imbeded (the PDA serial number) in the code, so you can not transfer maps unlocked for a certain unit to another one.
And Garmin states clearly that it is illegal to interchange unlock codes or PDAs to another user different from the one that registered the original unit.

Have you looked at:-

Yes I looked at Fugawi, but it's not really clear to me. Anyway if I want the city map of Portugal, it seem like I ahve to pay 99$ for Fugawi and 99$ for the streets..

I guess it's a saving of 100$ !!

But still is it going to give as much info than cityselect? Like street adress, and all the stores and hotels and restaurant...?

Mapopolis Portugal Maps (http://www.mapopolis.com/mapstore.jsp?s=1108131034109641&p=&q=3)

Maps are $9.95. The demo version of the map will work for a week. The viewer itself is free.

The drawback is that Mapopolis is not able to use the GPS functions of the iQue. But the rest of it will work.

It has address find and routing capabilities. You can also display the geo coordinates of a location on the map. If you have some time to plan trips, you can create waypoints for the Mapopolis route on the iQue, and follow your route that way.

Mapopolis Screenshots:

1) Route from Aeroporto do Porto to Monumental Casino
2) Same route, showing last leg
3) Find of Coliseum do Porto, showing coordinates

Correction: the demo maps expire in 9 days.

Notes:
- tapping the up/down arrows will show the turn directions and next map segment
- directions can be given in a synthesized voice which will try to pronounce the street names
- The software is much inferior to the Garmin's apps, but provides good or better value for the low price
- This is an excellent choice for one week leisure trips (since you spend nothing)
