hx4700 memory capacity

Does anyone know the maximum size CF and/or SD card I can get for my hx4700.

There's no limit, you can use any size cf or sd memory card currently available in the market. For cards greater than 2 GB, you just have to format it with proper FAT (ie. FAT32).

I recently tried a 4.0 GB SDHC card in my hx4700, and the PDA does not seem to recognise it, even when I do a soft reset. Am I supposed to format the card first or something, and if so how?

I don't think the 4700's SD slot supports cards in the HC form factor. The model was released prior to the advent of SDHC memory cards. You need to use standard SD memory cards to be certain of compatibility.
