Anybody know of a web browser for the TC that does NOT suck?

I specificly would like it to support popups (belive it or not) and free or try before you buy would be preferred. Thanks to anybody who knows!

Have you tried Web Pro 3.0?

http://www.palmone.com/us/software/webpro30/

It has a trial period but it's a bit pricey at $35. It supports pop-ups and does a better job of compressing wide web pages to minimize horizontal scrolling. I liked it but am still debating whether I want to spend $35 for something I'll use very infrequently.

$35 would be a small price to pay if I could my online banking working!!

However I do not see a link to download a trial of the Tungsten C version, just the the T3. It says:

If you own a Tungsten C, E, T, T2 or Zire 71 device, you can purchase the latest version of Web Pro from Palm Software Connection for the PC or Mac.

Even if I can get around the popup thing I still unsure if any browser out there that supports my itty bitty credit union. Hence the trial version.

This version of Web Pro works fine on a T/C, which is what I have. Can't guarantee that it'll work with your credit union but to the best of my knowledge it's the best option end users have at the moment.

If you're still having trouble, you might want to try accessing your CU's website via MobileLeap (http://www.mobileleap.net/translation/). There are some sights that Web Pro has trouble accessing which seem to work fine when I use MobileLeap.

I'm working in China now where a number of websites are filtered by the state-owned internet ISP (there's only one!) but I can usually get access using MobileLeap! How's that for sticking it to the Central Party???

Good luck,

Dustin_Bowls,

I've been having problems accessing my online banking account also. Purch'd my TC Jan '04, & never had a problem till Dec '04.

My CU told me I need to enable WEP Encryption 128bit. Did that, didn't help. Anyway, never had it enabled before, & was always able to gain access. I know of the risks w/o encryption, but from what I've heard & read about WEP it's not that great. That's why I never bothered with it.

I can still connect to the CU's website, but after logging in I'm taken to another CU page that has a link that says "if you're having difficulty accessing your acc't, click here".

This 2nd page is something new, didn't exist prior to Dec. Anyhow, clicking the link doesn't help, it brings up the old familiar "Pop-ups Not Supported" crap, which I'm sick of seeing.

My TC still has WebPro 2.0. The $35 for v3.0 is high. Don't know if I'll ever get it or not. I think Palm is really a bunch of money hungry @#*%+? for selling TC's without it. I think it should be a free upgrade, or at least offered at a substantial discount for current owners, but that will probably never happen.

Please let us know the specifics about your problems accessing your online acc't. Have you ever gained access at all? Do you use WEP?

Actually , no I don't use WEP.. I did at one point but I noticed many of the establishments that I frequent that offer wi-fi did not so I bagan to wonder why I was bothering! Furthmore, I live out in the sticks and my 2.4 ghz router will not even transmit out to the nearest road so I am secured by isolation!

I agree however.. paid what.. $400.00 for the TC and it seems like a slap in the face to pay $35.00 for a working web browser.. but if it works I don't care.

I will download the version for the T3 and see what happens. Thanks to all for your help! I have emailed Palm1 three times now and they don't seem to have the time to respond. I am beginning to wonder if they plan on ditching the TC. The support you get is poor at best, but most of the time there is no support at all. I switched to Palm because the OS is much more stable than Microsoft's answer.. but at least when I contated Microsoft they responded quickly and were helpful. :(

NetFont that was bundled with CLIE was very good at scaling pages and also supported 128bit encyption. Not sure if you can buy it separately or how much it costs but I really did like it. Also, you can use Avantgo client as a web browser. Don't know if it supports encryption, but hey, it's free so definitely worth a try.

I had not heard of NetFont.. but will give it a try. But what I did not realize you could use AvantGo as a web browser! It is already loaded and working fine! I assumed it used the browser that was pre loaded.

However, I have recently learned that Palm1 is now bundling WebPro 3.0 with the TC and I just sent them an email to see if I can get a "replacement" cd.

This posting is just a general posting to clarify some encryption issues in case it's not clear already:

1) WEP encryption is an issue between you and the nearest access point only, it is completely unrelated (and also transparent) to encryption at the web page you access. WEP encryption is not hard to break. WPA is better, but it's often not supported on PDAs.

2) Likewise, web page encryption (e.g. your netbank) is completely unrelated and separate from the access point encryption. This would be SSL encryption and could be weak (40 bits) or strong (128 bits), and it is in effect whether you use WEP encryption (or WPA or whatever) between you and your access point, or no access point encryption at all.

3) If you use WEP encryption between you and your access point there still won't be any encryption in effect between the access point and your final desitination, e.g. a web page (you'll be traversing the actual internet unencrypted!) unless:

4) When you access an "https:" (as opposed to a "http:") web page then there's end-to-end encryption, re: 2) above. It's quite safe.

In short: When accessing https: pages you can as well be on an open hot-spot. WEP (and WPA) encryption is for protecting your wireless network from intruders, not for much else.

Excellent explanation for a confusing topic.

I would also like to just add that ANY protection/encryption is better than none. Remember, there are NOT hackers on every street corner in your neighborhood trying to figure out how to get into your wireless home network. Worst case scenario is that your bum of a neighbor is trying to avoid ISP charges by sneaking on to your wireless network from time to time, which he will not be able to do if you just enable even the lowest WEP security option.

Great explanation!
