Rat//Kefer,

have either of you actually tried to 'hide' the gps 10 to see if you can obtain any kind of acquisition out of sky sight?

Will you be looking to use a rerad at all?

If hidden do you still need access to the power switch? Or can you just leave the GPS10 powered on all the time? It will start charging when you start the car?

I have a small pocket built into my old Caddy for a garage door opener that is "out of acquisition sight" as it is to the rear of the upper edge of the windshield and tight up against the metal roof. About an inch and a half of the G10 protrudes out toward the rear of the car as it will not fit all the way in. In that position I can pull in enough birds to give me a 3D signal albeit not the strongest. I can also turn the unit off and on from there. And it just looks like a garage door opener up there so pretty much out of sight and hopefully out of a thief's mind.

I'll have to see how it does up there out in the real world. If the signal is strong and consistent enough in that position I have 12v up there as well so I could direct wire it in and hope the auto on/off really works. So far I have not seen it behaving that way though even though I did follow El Raton's advice on setting up the proper attributes thru Bluetooth connection from PC to G10.

I am pleased with the reception of the G10 overall. Placing the G10 on the dashboard gives much better signal reception than than "my IQue 3600 or SP 2610 in the same location.

Not specifically, however something sort of funny happened yesterday. Right now, I have the GPS 10 sitting on my dash (unattached). I launched from a traffic light at, shall we say, a spirited level of acceleration. The GPS 10 went flying past me and ended up somewhere in the back of the car. Interestingly, I continued to to get a signal (although quite a bit less than before, but still enough to navigate). When I got out of the car, it was sitting on the floor behind the drivers seat! This little thing really has an awesome antenna.

I know that didn't specifically answer your question, but I thought it was amazing!

kefer - if the "spirited acceleration" doesn't kill you the GPS 10 between the eyes might! Turbo boost kick in a little early? Find that velcro strip, quick.

I'm laughing, but only because you weren't hurt :p .

Bokkie, I think a rerad would be completely unnecessary. The GPS 10 is MUCH better than the cfQue for reception (which wasn't bad at all!). I would compare it more to the iQue with a Gilsson antenna. In a pinch, you can also throw it on the roof for even better reception. Just waiting for a decent enough day to try that. I think that would only be required in the worst areas (NYC). I am off to Vegas in a couple weeks, so I am really looking forward to trying this on the plane without having to look like an idiot holding his pda up to the window!

Are you sure that will really help? ...

But that is one reason I bought the G10 since we generally fly American and they banned GPS almost 2 years ago. But they have no idea what an IQue is. The G10 should fit nicely between the window shade and window.

Good luck in Vegas - that is one of our favorite towns we get to several times a year.

Are there any restrictions on Bluetooth operation inside a plane?
I know they normally don’t like anything that transmits, cell phones, two way radios etc.

I use my iQue with a short cable Gilsson, then I just had the iQue on the little table in front of me. ( but I did put my jacket over the cable, didn’t want them to think I was trying to blow up the plane)

Just ordered two GPS10’s from TVNAV, hope to have them soon.

Is this down to a different antenna design or have they improved the hardware? Jonas had a lof of good things to say about the difference in the antennas fitted to the iQue and 60CS, the latter being a quadriheamophiliacperfectlyspherical or something like that.

In my car, there is a pocket at the top of the windscreen that is used for storing sunglasses. When I get mine I'll try it there. The Gilsson antenna looked 'cheap' enough and uninviting to leave it on the dash, but something stylish and that looks functional would attract the thieves like flies to the proverbial pile of poo!

And don't forget the "hey look at this thing" blue flashing LED. Although, some may think it is security.

Here's a market that needs to be addressed. If a GPS device can be designed that will broadcast its location periodically, say for example to APRS (http://www.aprs.net/), then we can find thieves when they steal it.

It would be useful in other way too. I would pay an extra $200 for such an option.

It's sort of there now, but I think OnStar requires a cellular network. Also, OnStar is $16.95/mo, $24.95/mo in Canada. I like your idea better!

OnStar®
The available OnStar with one-year Safe & Sound Plan† provides the peace of mind of knowing you can request help with just the push of a button. OnStar Advisors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If your air bags deploy, OnStar Advisors are automatically alerted and can send help to your vehicle's exact location even if you are unable to answer their call. If your vehicle is stolen, Advisors can assist police in attempting to locate your vehicle. In most cases, Advisors can also unlock your doors remotely if your keys are locked inside.
