hi,

i am trying to sync my ipaq 4150 with my laptop which has a wireless g connection to the internet/my network using activesync 3.7. up til now i have been using the cradle to sync, but as both devices are wireless i am sure i should be able to sync wirelessly, but when i tap on 'sync' on my ipaq i get an error message saying the connection cannot be made. the same when i try to set up a connection from my pc.

as regards firewall i am using trend micro and have added the ipaq to my trusted zone. it is detected by trend micro as being on the network.

i can ping my ipaq from my pc, but when i have trend micro enabled i can't ping the other way round, so this surely has something to do with it.

when i disable trend micro, the activesync program on my computer changes to 'connected' as guest when i tap 'sync' on the ipaq (but not before). the sync button on the pc is greyed out, and on the ipaq it continually says 'connecting'.

does anyone have any ideas what i should try next?

thanks

nick

First you may want to install the latest Activesync (3.8)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/activesync38.mspx
And there's several guides in this thread that may help:

i am making progress. i can now ping my pocket pc from my laptop and visa versa with the trend micro program running. in fact whether i have it running or not exactly the same happens when i try to sync, so i am led to believe that the problem isn't due to firewall/trend micro.

now when i click sync on my pcc, active sync (3.8) on my laptop changes to 'guest: connected', but it still doesn't sync. activesync on my pcc continues to show 'connecting', but nothing happens.

any suggestions as to what might be stopping the sync?

thanks

Did you create partnership between the ipaq and the desktop via cradle prior to wifi connection?

well i have been syncing via usb cradle for the last six months fine - not sure what you mean by a partnership.

ok, i tried syncing via cradle and it came up with the name of the connection: nick_ipaq, and synched fine.

then i tried wirelessly and couldn't connect all - activesync on laptop didn't change to guest - connected. i then couldn't ping my laptop from my ipaq, so closed down trend micro and then could ping again. so there does seem to be some issue with trend micro after all. even though i was able to ping with trend micro running 5 minutes ago, i am not now, and this surely has nothing to do with activesync.

i was wondering whether there is a way of configuring my firewall in trend micro to allow all activesync activity, but can't see how to do this. but if i can't even ping then i am not sure what to do

ok,

now i have added activesync as incoming/outgoing application under firewall and i can get a connection between ipaq and laptop, even though i still can't ping laptop from ipaq.

when connected wirelessly though activesync on laptop is still showing as guest, rather than nick_ipaq. how do i change this so that i can sync?

thanks

In Trend Micro firewall, have you enabled Netbios ?

I think it's in exception list in profiles;

netbios was already allowed under my firewall settings. but surely if i disable firewall settings and still have the issue with guest partnership as opposed to nick_ipaq then this is not a firewall issue

Do you have NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP on your desktop?
Start, Control Panel, Network Connections. Right click on your active network card, select Properties, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from the list and select properties. Select Advanced then the WINS tab and check Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

yes i changed this setting quite early on.

about 45 minutes ago my ipaq synched with the correct partnership (nick_ipaq) without me doing anything. i hadn't set up a schedule, so this is rather weird. it proves that i can synch properly between the 2 devices wirelessly, but when i tried to repeat it manually, activesync on my pc reverted to 'guest partnership' and so no synch. i have now tried setting up a schedule for automatic synching and while the ipaq does attempt to sych, again a guest partnership comes up.
