I am interested in the IPAQ 3900 series, but concerned about the possibilities of needing to purchase and carry around a thick expansion slot. I will not be storing large amounts of information, I don't think. Mostly, I will be using it for contacts/calendar/lists, etc. You may wonder why I wouldn't just buy a cheaper organizer, but I want the potential capabilities of the Pocket PC. I know the 3900 series has an SD card slot. Wouldn't that be enough for my uses? Why would I need to have an expansion slot? Would it be mainly if I wanted to have online access, etc? Sorry for these newbie questions! THANKS!!!

Short answer is yes, sd slot is adequate for your current needs of extra storage space. SD slot is a newer technology, which means other type of sd cards may show up in the future to meet your needs.
But to answer you question of why do we need cf or pcmcia sleeves now, they provide things that sd slot can't provide now such as modem, network(wired and wireless), gps, cellular card, cheaper and larger and better preformance storage capacity.
The new model sleeves from ipaq are a lot thinner, and there are 3rd party sleeves that are really thin if anyone is concerned about size. Lastly, the new ipaq sleeve has extra battery therefore if you use your ipaq intensively, such as mp3 music player, the extra battery on the sleeve will extend the use time by quite a bit
