My new phone (Audiovox xv6600) has GPS built in. So why do I have to get a GPS 10? (look, on topic after all.) Is there any software that uses the built in GPS function that works with the 911 system to drive map software? Why not?
I guess that Garmin consider themselves to be mostly a hardware company. I would think that they could sell a pile of software if they set up City Select to use the built in GPS that exists in PDAs with phone functions.
I agree. They have the best software IMO, and I think they would sell a lot of it if they allowed it to support NMEA.

Is it possible to get nmea out of a phone? I can't find any documentation of this function on my device. In settings I can select "Location on" or "911 only." I am guessing that with "Location on" the location information goes out with each phone call. I have no idea how that information would be retrieved, or how one would get the information out of the phone part and into the ppc part.

Did the phone come with a manual? Any technical specs? Online documentation? It's hard to find anything with google except places that want to sell it.

What GPS applications came with your phone?

None, that's my point. I don't think there are any, but I'd be happy to be enlightened. The link to GPSOne that AD provided isn't real helpful. (No offense AD, its GPSOne that could be more direct.)

I thought i read somewhere that Nextel had something similar. The problem with this system is it is tied to their own system, ie you have to pay to play. It is not that quick to respond and it doesn't work everywhere. (going by a review of the original nextel system.
The best way to think about it is a plug in, that you pay a fee for.

I don't want to pay a subscription. I'll probably get the GPS 10 if it's compatable. It just seems silly not to be able to use the GPS that is already there.
I don't think it is really GPS in the same sense as the GPS 10 though. It uses your position with the cellular network to determine the location. If you don't have cell service, you are lost :p .

I read the GpsOne documentation, and it does have GPS in the sense that it locates using satellites, and plus an assist by using triangulation of the cell towers. But it appears the GPS does not work by itself, because it relies on the cellular provider to give ephemeris data back to the handset.
