I'm having the most trying time configuring my TT to use my Sony Ericsson T68i as a modem for email and internet type stuff. I've called AT&T Wireless (my mobile phone carrier) & Earthlink (my ISP), and I've gone as far as they can take me, but I need more help in reaching the promised land. One of the reasons I got the TT (which I love) and the T68i (which I love) is for their integrated BT (which I love).
My problem is that when I use VersaMail to dial my Earthlink access number, the TT initializes the Earthlink account, dials the number in the T68i, retries the number and then gives me an error message ("Error: no carrier (0x1102)" then says "VersaMail: Unable to Establish PPP Connection".
I'm hoping that someone out there has configured their Palm to send and receive emails and faxes, surf the internet,... and can share with me their experiences configuring these devices.
AT&T doesn't know, the woman recommended that I try online forums (at least she was honest), Earthlink and I have gone over all the settings together and they seem to check out. I've tried different dial-up access numbers. The only other thing I can think of is that there must be some settings in the phone I have to configure (which would be another forum, I knnow), but then that doesn't reall make sense to me because the phone tries to dial the access number.
I'm hoping that someone else out there has made this work for them, or at least maybe I can get some new questions to ask Earthlink, AT&T or even Palm (but their customer service hours are difficult to make sometimes and then there's the outside chance that they don't know what's going on either, but I'll try anything now.)

Hmmm... I spoke with Verizon the other day and they didn't even know what Bluetooth was, let alone whether their phones supported it. I've been scouting around trying to find the best price on the cheapest possible Bluetooth capable phone, but they don't seem to be real prevalent here in the states yet. Any suggestions would be truely appreciated :)

I was having similar trouble when I first purchased them both and contacted both AT&T and Earthlink. They were not much help. Finally I used the phonelink updater on the CD and installed it that way and it worked fine. It really only took about a minute and I was done. I just set up a new connection, choose USA and AT&T GPRS and it worked like a charm.
Also with AT&T did not have an outgoing mail server so I spoke with earthlink and they gave me one I could use. smtpauth.earthlink.net. It needed to be an authorized email server.
Hope this helps.

Haven't tried it yet, I'm waiting for Nextel to come out with a Bluetooth enabled phone. I did read and interesting article in EDN about bluetooth connectivity. The author experienced the same type of issues "trouble with consistent connections" "un-trained support personel" the article is located at the following site
EDN hands-on project: All-in-one cell phones—not a one-for-all panacea (http://www.e-insite.net/ednmag/index.asp?layout=article&articleId=CA253781)

First off, thanks everyone for all your support and suggestions. I used just about all of them. Now I think we've gotten somewhere with this whole enchilada, but I was so busy being surprised and elated and awed that I forgot to take step-by-step notes, so bear with me as I try to recreate my successes and failures for anyone else who might be going through this....
My tools = Mac OS X, SE T68i, Palm TT. The phone and Palm having been successfully paired and trusted.
Now I see that my intuitive methodology of trying to configure my phone as a dial-up modem was the first wrong turn, so maxinrome, I was trying to set up both GSM and GPRS accounts on the phone itself and spent a lot of unnecessary time with AT&T and Earthlink tech supports.
And mcaplan5, I resorted to Palm Tech Support and the website as my last resort after I tried Spartacus' recommended solution (which didn't work initially, but worked later. Read on, dear reader).
The Phone_Link_Updater from the CD didn't have my phone listed, so I downloaded a new one from Palm.com. From that .sit file, I installed everything the website suggests
http://www.palm.com/support/downloads/phonelink_legal.html
* MoHiSp1Lib.prc
* NMSCPT.prc
* PhoneLink.prc
* PhoneLink_xxXX.prc Where xxXX is the same language as that used on the device. deDE for German/enUS for English/esES for Spanish/frFR for French/itIT for Italian/ptBR for Portuguese
* PMHDB.pdb
* PMNDB.pdb
* and the type of Phone I have (SE T68i.prc)
I performed a HotSync and installed these to the TT. It sounds silly, but I did all this before and this time it only worked because now I had the CS on the phone.
Then we went to the PhoneLink app. on the TT and set-up the Network Service. My network provides GPRS so I selected "Yes", same as before. Now I selected "USA" as the area that my phone service is registered, but this time I knew something had changed because before "USA" was the only option, but now there's about 25 countries to choose from. I still did "USA", but now with a faint glimmer of hope.
Next, we selected our carrier and my hope really expanded. Before, there were only 3 choices and mine (AT&T) wasn't allowed. But now there were about 15-20 choices including 3 AT&T's. I chose "AT&T GPRS" because it worked for Spartacus. (I went back and tried the other 2 AT&T's just to see, but my folks was right the first time. Sorry I doubted you, S.) :)
And that was it. I made it harder for myself by insisting that my plan would only work if the phone was the dial-up modem I assumed it could only be. That led me to a whole buncha talking with techs who had never heard of my situation. Also, my past experience with Palm Tech Support (long wait times, concrete hours of operation for phone support at Central Standard Time, lack of my specific need on the support site in proper normalspeak,...) made me choose them as a last resort. This whole process wasn't very intuitive to me, and it was good that I posted my plight for all the world to see, because I got some practical suggestions I could try with the Palm tech when I got him on the horn (surprisingly short wait time at 4:30 pm PST!!)
I mention that I'm a Mac guy just because the Phone_link thingy wasn't on the included CD's and the first time I downloaded it from Palm.com, it didn't give me all the information this last download did.
I read the article joe_balint posted and now I experience those same confusions (only sometimes and not because I read the article). Sometimes I get instant-on connection with the phone and the establishing "handshake" and I check emails and websites with ease, and sometimes I get an error message that states an incomplete connection due to something or another. One tried to blame the DNS server thingy for not responding, and another blamed my phone for not being ready to accept the connection (even though it just worked last time with no changes in either appliance, the TT or the T68i). Weird. Once I had to totally delete each device from the other's "trusted pair" list and re-establish a bond. It's work like a charm since, but will it always?
Only time will tell (that and obnoxiously long posts). ;)
Thank you everyone for your tips and tricks. I wish Larken and mcaplan5 the best in their future connections. I just checked and of all the carriers listed in the PhoneLink setup thingy, Verizon wasn't listed, but...maybe that will change pronto-ly.
Wireless Lakers.com on my Palm.
I love you. I love you all.

Dear all,
at this very moment, I'm connected with Nokia 7650 and PowerBook G4 running Mac OSX Jaguar thru bluetooth adapter using GPRS connection (slow, to be honest) using exactly the same configurations settings that I've tried several times with the tungsten palm with bad results. :confused:
So, my opinion is that the palm tungsten bluetooth interface is somehow incompatible with gprs modems or that the sw running on tt is fake.
Well, the settings that TIM (my mobile telephone company) suggested in order to make the palm tungsten working with nokia 7650 (maybe the same for T68i), are the following:
Go Prefs
Go Communication
Go Connection
Tap New
Give a name *
Connect to: Modem
Via: Bluetooth
Device: Tap to find
Select your phone after searching
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: as you like
Tap Details
Speed: 57600
Flow Ctl: Automatic
Tap Ok
Tap Ok
Tap Done
Go Network
Tap New
Give a name
Username: ask your mobile company (in italy is your personal telephone number)
Connection: Use the connection you configured before
Phone: ask your mobile company (in italy is *99# for nokia 7650 and they told me there are different numbers for different phone models)
Tap Details
Connection type: PPP
Idle Timeout: 3mins
Query DNS: Flag ON
IP Sddress: Flag ON
Tap Script
Must be only the first row saying "End:"
Tap Ok
Tap OK
Tap Connect and cross your fingers
Talking about the simple GSM connection, works great and I use it
most of the time.
The settings for the normal connection to an internet provider is the following:
Go Prefs
Go Communication
Go Connection
Tap New
Give a name *
Connect to: Phone
Via: Bluetooth
Device: Tap to find
Select your phone after searching
Model: Choose your model
Tap Ok
Tap Ok
Tap Done
Go Network
Tap New
Give a name **
Username you know
password you know
Connection choose the name you used before**
Phone you know
Tap Connect
Maybe what I'm writing above is very simple and without any technological unknown procedures :p but is exactly what I've found calling my mobile company and surfing the net.
Hope this helps dear tt friends.
Bye everybody
