Apologies to anyone now bored with my postings but I have one more!
OK... I set up my Netbook with my ISP (exactly the same settings as my 5mx). I try to dial out to send/ retrieve e-mails having carefully lined up the modem to the Netbook. The Netbook dialogue box states modem is not connected. I check my ISP settings and continue. Still no luck. I try to connect to the web. Same message. Try to send a fax and this won't connect either - the modem is still silent with "on" light on (but obviously no one home!). I try the same on my 5mx - no problem both web and e-mail connections working fine.
I then connect up the Netbook to my old Psion wired Travel Modem though do not have all the settings handy to connect through but at least it's making a noise showing that the Netbook recognises it I suppose.
This is the first time I have tried the Netbook for e-mail/web (which is the latest Opera trial download by the way - see other posting re OS if you are wondering why I haven't the freeby Psion download one with the latest OS).
One thing which may be an issue or not. On the Netbook settings for e-mail there is an extra box that doesn't appear on the 5mx. This shows mailbox type which states IMAP. If I try to change this to POP3 (which I believe is my ISP's "type") I get a message saying "This item is not available". Has this anything to do with the problem?
The merry dance continues....!!
Any help, as always, will be gratefully received.

Grant,
We're not bored yet ... It's pretty interesting seeing how things are working out with your customised netBook.
I don't have a definite solution for your problem except to say thank you ... until I just checked I hadn't known that IMAP support had been included in the latest OS build. The fact that you cannot add a POP account is odd and may imply that other behind-the-scenes tinkering has taken place.
Do you have a mobile phone with a modem which you can try to get an internet connection with?

Have you made sure that the link to the desktop is turned off? That could mess up the infrared connection to the travel modem.
The new IMAP suppport should not interfere. Moreover, while there is a box to check the program apparently doesn't actually support IMAP. Even when checked it just POP's mail off an IMAP/POP server.

I never get bored when a person asks their questions intelligently ;)
I agree with Global - first thing is is your 'link to desktop' enabled (System screen, Menu.. Tools.. Link to Desktop..)? The IR and wired interfaces share the same serial port and if the link is enabled it will prevent the IR port working entirely. Its a good idea to keep the link disabled unless you're using by the way; just another thing putting a drain on your battery...
This shows mailbox type which states IMAP. If I try to change this to POP3 (which I believe is my ISP's "type") I get a message saying "This item is not available". Has this anything to do with the problem?
You cannot change the mailbox type of an existing account. Presumably you can change this box when you are creating a new account?
If the error message mentions the modem, then the mailbox type is definitely not the issue anyway, but you will need to have this right when you get past the modem problem.

Grant, you're making a great contribution by telling us of your experiences with your rather unusual netBook.

Latest situation:
PsiWin off
Reset e-mail (pop3) and dial up settings for web. I have also de selected any reference to proxy server (Opera/preferences/connections/general/proxies tab) as it trying to dial the "one - ed" site which appeared in these settings (i.e. all entries in all tabs of this dialogue are blank - is this correct?)
Tried sending e-mails via my Travel Modem (with new batteries!) and still not a peep can be heard followed by an error box saying that there's no response from the modem (which works with my 5mx).
Tried accessing the web via Opera - no success and the error message saying "Network Problem" appeared.
Julie has suggested connecting via my PC using Mocha ppp to see if that works (thanks Julie for the help today!). I will try this later.
Maybe this Netbook is configured by the factory in a different way which is why a) I cannot load the new OS image file and b) can't dial out in the normal way via my Travel Modem (yet it seems to have activated the non infra red old travel modem).
By the way the infra red does work as I have been using it with EpocSync successfully.
Well thanks all for your suggestions to date and if anyone can figure this out I will be extremely grateful. Failing that, I will have to resign myself to the fact that I have a non Net capable Netbook! As I said to Julie - it's Thanksgiving here soon but maybe my Turkey has arrived sooner than I expected!! Still, it's a great desk top machine compared to my PC and the dark/reflective/small screen of my trusty 5mx.
Grant
PS What do you think my chances are in trying to get an answer out of Psion/Teklogix/ on this issue? I cannot find an e-mail link to their customer services so if anyone has this please advise. - thanks.

When I was trying to get GPRS working on my netBook I quite often got "Network Problem" messages and had to perform a soft reset to get things working again. If you haven't done this already then try performing one and then trying again.

Tried sending e-mails via my Travel Modem (with new batteries!) and still not a peep can be heard followed by an error box saying that there's no response from the modem (which works with my 5mx). Two things which I must have suggested a hundred times when people are having modem problems:
1) Try using the Comms application to see if the modem is responding and, if it is, dial up your ISP from Comms. You cannot negotiate an internet connection but you can connect and get Username and Password prompts etc. This will confirm that Psion and modem are talking.
2) Use "The Dialer" to connect instead of trying to dial up from an application such as Email, Web, Opera etc. This is my standard 'blurb' on The Dialer.
You might find it useful to install John McAleely's
little program "The Dialer". This lets you connect
to the internet independently from any particular
application, a bit like Dial Up Networking on a PC.
It will also confirm that a connection has been
established before trying to use an internet
application such as Web, Email, Opera, RMRNews etc.
One thing though if you do decide to use it, make
sure that in "Control Panel / Internet" you have a
time entered in the box "On exit, stay online for..."
which is sufficient to allow you to open an internet
application (or in the case of Email, open a mailbox),
otherwise the connection will drop immediately.
The Dialer can be downloaded from the "Series 5(mx)"
page of my website or there is a link to John's site
for more information.
I assume that, in the netBook, you do have "Connect via" set to Infrared?

Thanks Simon, thanks Mike. Mike, where is the setting located for "connect via Infrared"? I will also try the Comms route but need a bit of a) b) c) help as I have never ventured into that area before.
Thanks,
Grant

Mike ignore the question re Infrared - I found it in modem settings of course.

It seems to be working on accessing the web. That's a relief and a big thank you Mike! I assumed that on modem settings/Travel Modem that the default would have been Infra Red and not cable (which it was indeed set to!).
However, it's dialling out but eventually it disconnects and I get "could not connect to remote server so I assume I need to do some fiddling here".
On the e-mail front - it dials out OK but am getting the error message:
"..Could not find specified email server. Email settings or Internet service DNS settings may be incorrect"
Well at least it's dialling out, I just need to work out why I'm not getting through on both of the above. Once again, any ideas?

Hoo "at last" ray! All sorted! I am communicating here via the Netbook - this is great! It will be even better when my Goldcard modem arrives as Ican retire my Travel modem (to my son's 5mx).
Now if only Ican get the new OS image file to work then Iwill be 100% happy with my new purchase. As it is I am 98% happy which is good enough for now.
A big thanks again to all who have tried to help with this issue.
