when the gps tells me to turn south on so and so street - there is no compass on that screen - one must toggle to another screen to see the compass. Every time the voice/prompts start - they assume you know your bearing already!

There is a very small symbol for north on the map. From the QueMap screen, go to preferences (the menu icon at the bottom of the screen), select Maps, then under Orientation, select Track Up below 3 mi. That way you don't have to know which way the compass is pointing. You will see the route in terms of right/left.

It is true that after turning the GPS on, you have to move 10-20 feet in order for the map to orient itself.

There is something of a learning curve to using the iQue. Patience will be rewarded.

The reason for this is of course that until you move, the GPS doesn't know which way you are heading. So left/right doesn't have any meaning, until you've moved a bit.
But either you have the map oriented with north up, in which case you know your bearing, since north is upwards.

Or you have track up, in which case a little arrow in the upper left corner of the screen tells you what is north.

While in Florida a week ago, I bought a tiny compass that goes onto the watch wrist band. That way, I know what way north is even if I sit in a parked car. It's quite a nice addition to the iQue.
