In your opinions Bokkie and Kefer is it worth changing the maps over to VGA or wait for Garmin to resolve.

The funning thing was I emailed Garmin about this prior to ordering my GPS 10 and they stated that it did support high resolution screens. What a load of Cr*p.

Where do I get this OzVGA from?

How difficult is the install?

How difficult is it to uninstall?

Thanx Y'all

The advantage of OzVGA is that is configurable and you can tweak the settings, something that SE_VGA was not so good with. Of the two, I found OzVGA to be easier to use and you can switch to 640x480 and back again with little more than a button press.

Here's the link (http://207.153.195.134/) to it.

There are two files to download one containing the dlls that you copy to the PPC Windows directory, and the other file is the executable. Unfortunately, there is no automated install file so you simply download the files, unzip the zip file, and select all the file and right-click to copy them. Open the Mobile Device folder of your PPC with the Explorer. Open the Windows folder and right-click and paste the files into it. You do the same with the executable but you can copy that to any folder of your own choosing. Uninstalling, in the absence of a formal uninstaller means you have to select the files on the PPC and delete them manually. The installation takes no more than the time it takes to copy-and-paste. It would be nice if it had automated the install/uninstall process but that's not an option as yet.

Garmin are right. They do support hi-res screens, but on their terms - not ours. I think they could have done a better job than they did.

Well, they sorta told you the truth. When you are in map display, the maps definitely show in full vga - very clear, awesome resolution. But the Que program is definitely not a true vga program: you have to manually change resolution outside the program using a utility (like OzVGA), which means the icons and text are all too small and messed up (see the other post I just responded to regarding the problems).

I hope Garmin fixes Que soon, but until then OzVGA is a sort of acceptable band-aid fix.

A developer with no funding, and no connections with corporate backing produces something that the sheer marketing muscle and R&D at Garmin could not, or does not have the will to produce says much, imho. True, the PPC environment is still cutting its teeth and some would argue that Microsoft do not make it easy, but they certainly make it possible and do-able. GARMIN, give us 640x480 and an SDK. Ok?

Look at his website and you'll see he mentions he wrote it in two days! And, like you said kefer, he gives it away free!

Do you use this on your M5? What does it let you do.

I tried both programs on my x50v. I think its amazing, but I know why MS didnt include this as a feature. The things are just too small. I like my big smooth text better. I dont see it to be necessary to even have true vga unless like you guys said, it could only apply to maps and certain parts of the screen without being reset.

Isnt there something like pixel doubling that they did when they made the switch from 160x160 to 320x320. Would that work?

No, it won't work with M5, M5 does not have VGA resolution, only QVGA. There are other commercial products that increase resolution on QVGA pocketpc,
Nyditot Virtual Display

dotPocket

What does a program like OzVGA do for an M5 user? Just change system font sizes?

Nothing, i don't even think it's going to start on non-vga model.
