Ok, any of you M5 users used any of the wifi SD cards yet, with any regularity? How are they on power consumption?

Of course, it would be easy to get a GPS 10, and a nice HP with wifi built in, but the M5 form factor, with the built in antenna, does have some advantages. (and the SD card is quite a bit smaller to carry around than the GPS 10)

Anyway, sure would like to know how well the cards work with the M5.

Check out this thread, the subject title is a bit misleading.

Thanks Cat! Well, after reading that, I think I would go with the straight wifi card myself.

BTW, why would ANYone need to use wifi while using the GPS antenna? I find that a bit weird.

Then again, I don't have any wifi reception when I am driving anyway <g>

<edit> Seems to be a few growing up problems with the M5. I'm sure they will be cleaned up eventually, from the 3600 experience.

But....very few problems with the iPaq and GPS 10 ;), even with wifi on while driving :D .

There's a whole community (http://www.wardriving.com/about.php) of people who do just that. :)

Not that I've ever done anything like that  , but I've heard new neighborhoods are full of hotspots with really good reception. That's because all the basements are unfinished and the offices are all on the second floor. So I've heard anyways ;) .

But they are all VERY smart people who wouldn't dare leave a wirelss network open, so it's really not worthwhile :D .

umm, I'm not naive:) However let's just say there's no worthwhile reason for doing so. imho. Surely there are more productive things to do!

Rephrase that:

It's not an issue of using Wifi while driving, but of being forced to carry more than one SD card and constantly having to swap them out (any decently sized map set won't fit into internal memory). It's nice to have everything in one place, and not having to remember to install anything new to both cards instead of just the one.

The reason I bought an SDIO wifi+256MB card was so that I could have one card that would do everything I needed.

The wifi doesn't have to be on to interfere with the GPS, BTW. Just the presence of the wifi antenna sticking out of the SD slot is enough to degrade satellite reception significantly.

It's been speculated that this was the reason the iQue 3600 didn't get WIFI even though Garmin wanted to be able to include it.

The problem with having the wifi-256mb as your only card, is that it would be obtrusive. the Sandisk model sticks out a few centimeters. eventually it would probably break when carring or packing in your pocket.

I still have my Clie UX50 and use it for wifi as I have not found a way to use the iQue M5 explorer in "landscape" mode. Im still a newbie with PocketPC platform so maybe in time when I can figure it out I may make the full conversion to the PPC.

Until then, "Palm in my pocket and my Pocket PC in my hand"... How Ironic!!!

It does stick out quite far from the SD slot. Hence an order for the Otterbox PDA case. Time will tell if it is a usable solution, however.

The Otterbox case is a whoppping $99. Id doubt many people will shell out that much cash for a case that is unproven and appears monstrously bulky in the 1 poor quality photo displayed by the website. Im not trying to diss your case but, it really looks bulky.

I guess if you plan to take your PDA to a work environment like a construction jobsite or in rough terrain the Otter may be for you.

Maybe this (http://www.pdastreet.com/forums//showthread.php?s=&postid=268290#post268290) case is more to your liking. Still a hundred though.
